After Cavill’s Exit, The Witcher’s Ciri Star Thought About Quitting Too: “He’s The Geralt I Grew up With”
Freya Allan, who plays Ciri in Netflix’s The Witcher, has revealed that she almost left the show after Henry Cavill announced his exit.
Cavill, who played Geralt of Rivia, confirmed in October 2022 that he would be leaving the series after season 3, and Liam Hemsworth was set to take over the role.
Allan told NME that learning about Cavill’s departure was difficult. She only found out a day before the news became public while filming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. She said she wanted to finish the show with Cavill, but his decision made her question her own future.
“Season three was a really difficult season for everyone. I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy that played my adoptive father. For the first time, I was seeing what life away from The Witcher could look like and then the lead moves on…”
For a while, Allan seriously thought about quitting as well. She eventually decided to stay and complete Ciri’s story. “Once I’d made that choice, I made the most of every moment,” she said.
The change from Cavill to Hemsworth made things even trickier because Ciri and Geralt are mostly apart in season 4, only appearing together in flashbacks and visions. Allan admitted it felt unusual and that she often thought about Cavill while filming. “He’s the Geralt I grew up with,” she said.
Cavill’s departure caused a strong reaction from fans, and losing Allan as well could have made the response even bigger. Since Geralt and Ciri are the heart of the story, keeping Ciri in the series helped fans adjust to Hemsworth as the new Geralt.
Season 4 of ‘The Witcher’ is now available on Netflix, starring Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.
