After Missing All the Promo Tours for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Mark Ruffalo Finally Breaks Silence
Marvel’s press tours are usually a wall-to-wall parade of familiar faces, with every cast member making the rounds on talk shows, red carpets, and social media in the weeks leading up to release. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ followed that same playbook for nearly its entire cast, sending Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal across a relentless circuit of interviews and premieres.
One name was conspicuously missing from all of it. Despite reprising his role as Bruce Banner and Hulk in what’s reportedly a significant supporting part, Mark Ruffalo never appeared in a single major promotional interview, press junket, or red carpet for the film, an absence noticeable enough that a viral post about it racked up more than seven million views online.
Ruffalo has now finally addressed the film, though not through the traditional press circuit that swallowed up the rest of his co-stars. Following the news that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ had set a box office record with $72 million in previews, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Ruffalo shared a message on his Instagram story reading, “Congratulations to All! Sony and Marvel teams. Congratulations to our Cast and Crew. Congratulations Tom Holland and Destin Cretton. I had a blast with you!”

The silence leading up to that moment had fueled plenty of fan speculation. Some theorized Marvel deliberately kept Ruffalo sidelined given his well-known tendency to accidentally spoil plot details in interviews, while others floated more scattered explanations without much evidence behind them.
The actual reason turned out to be considerably more mundane than any of the theories. Ruffalo has reportedly been tied up filming Season 2 of HBO Max’s ‘Task,’ which began production on July 9 in Manayunk, Philadelphia, a scheduling conflict that would have made joining the film’s extensive press circuit logistically difficult regardless of any studio strategy.
Marvel’s broader promotional approach for the film has also leaned heavily on protecting its biggest surprises, with several cast members deliberately avoiding discussion of key plot points throughout the campaign, including details around Sadie Sink’s still-unnamed character and the specifics of Hulk’s role in the story. Keeping Ruffalo away from press entirely would have been one more way to ensure audiences experienced those reveals fresh in theaters rather than through pre-release interviews.
Ruffalo’s return as Bruce Banner marks his first major live-action appearance since ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ and a brief cameo in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ and reportedly represents his tenth appearance in the role since debuting in 2012’s ‘The Avengers.’ The film is also notable for marking the first time Hulk and Spider-Man have shared the screen together in live-action.
For a franchise built on carefully orchestrated marketing campaigns, Ruffalo’s near-total absence from the promotional cycle stands out as an unusual choice, even with a reasonable scheduling explanation behind it. His Instagram message, arriving only after the film’s record-breaking numbers became public, feels less like calculated silence and more like an actor simply catching up with the moment from the sidelines.

Either way, fans finally have confirmation that Ruffalo was watching the film’s success unfold in real time, even if he wasn’t front and center for the buildup. Now audiences can see for themselves exactly what kept him so busy that even Marvel’s marketing machine couldn’t pin him down.
