Al Pacino has been in some of the most famous movies in history, but when it comes to his personal favorite films, he doesn’t pick his own work.

In an interview with AFI, he was asked about his all-time favorite movie and took a moment to think. “My favourite movie of all time?” he said. “Oh, I have about five or six – not any I’ve done – but I have five or six movies that I really think are the greatest. I’d have to think about them; they’re varied.”

Even though he didn’t give a full list, Pacino did reveal two films he holds in high regard. First, he mentioned The Tree of Wooden Cloggs, saying, “I know I really liked The Tree of Wooden Cloggs, but they’re all different kinds of films.” This 1978 Italian movie was directed by Ermanno Olmi and even won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film tells the story of peasant life on a farmhouse in 19th-century Lombardy.

It stars Luigi Ornaghi, Francesca Moriggi, and Omar Brignolo, and is known for its realistic style, using real farmers and locals instead of professional actors, which is very similar to the early Italian neorealist films.

As he was leaving to speak to another reporter, Pacino quickly added another favorite. “Singin’ in the Rain is good, yeah,” he said with a smile. Unlike his first choice, this film is widely recognized and loved around the world.

Directed and choreographed by Gene Kelly, Singin’ in the Rain is a musical romantic comedy that remains one of Hollywood’s most iconic films. It stars Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell, and Cyd Charise. The story looks at Hollywood in the late 1920s, during the tricky shift from silent movies to talking pictures, showing the challenges and humor faced by actors during that time.

These two picks show how varied Pacino’s taste in movies is. On one hand, he admires the quiet, realistic storytelling of The Tree of Wooden Cloggs, and on the other, he appreciates the joy and classic charm of Singin’ in the Rain.

Pacino’s favorites give fans a glimpse into what inspires one of the greatest actors of all time, showing that even someone with decades of film experience can still be amazed by the power of a well-told story.
