Alan Ritchson is having a massive summer, and ‘Motor City‘ is right at the center of it. The 1970s set revenge thriller stars Ritchson as an ex con seeking payback in Detroit, and it just arrived in theaters, sending fans straight to Google to figure out when they can watch it from home.
The good news is that ‘Motor City’ is generating plenty of buzz around its theatrical run. The bad news for anyone hoping to stream it immediately is that a firm digital date has not been locked in yet, though there is a reasonable window fans can expect based on how the industry typically handles these releases.
‘Motor City’ Theatrical Release Details
‘Motor City’ opened wide in United States theaters on July 24, 2026, distributed through Independent Film Company. The film had its world premiere in the Venice Spotlight section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival back in August 2025 before making its way to general audiences a year later.
The movie was directed by Potsy Ponciroli and written by Chad St. John, with production companies Stampede Ventures and Gramercy Park Media backing the project. The film carries a reported budget of thirty million dollars and runs 103 minutes.
Alan Ritchson was originally cast when Timur Bekmambetov was announced as director, but directorial duties shifted to Potsy Ponciroli in May 2024, with Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster and Pablo Schreiber rounding out the main cast around that same time.

‘Motor City’ follows John Miller, a Vietnam veteran in 1970s Detroit who falls for a local gangster’s girl named Sophia. In retaliation, the gangster enacts a frame job that sends the innocent man to prison, and from there Miller’s life spirals into a mission of vengeance.
Together with his wartime friends, John plots a prison break, vengeance, and a route back to Sophia’s arms. The film is notable for its minimal dialogue, with the film largely marketed as a dialogue free experience that leans on visuals and action instead.
The key characters in ‘Motor City’ are John Miller played by Alan Ritchson, Sophia played by Shailene Woodley, and Reynolds played by Ben Foster. Pablo Schreiber and Lionel Boyce also appear in supporting roles.
Critics have been fairly split but generally positive, with the film sitting at around 69 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes from 36 reviews at the time of the wide release. Collider’s Aidan Kelley called it a smooth journey with plenty to say without much dialogue at all.
When Will Motor City Be Available on Streaming
As of now, no specific streaming platform has been announced for ‘Motor City’. That has left fans guessing, especially since Stampede Ventures projects have landed on a wide variety of platforms in the past, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Space Cadet currently streams on Prime Video, while The Saint of Second Chances is available on Netflix, both examples of where a Stampede Ventures title might eventually end up. Based on typical release patterns, ‘Motor City’ should arrive on digital platforms for purchase or rental in about 30 days following its theatrical debut, following the standard Premium Video On Demand window most studios use.
A wider streaming release, meaning the film landing on a subscription platform rather than paid rental, could take closer to three months. Until an official platform is confirmed, outlets tracking the release say they will update as soon as information becomes available.
Alan Ritchson’s Packed 2026 Schedule
Part of why ‘Motor City’ has fans paying close attention is the timing. ‘Reacher’ Season 4 premieres on August 12, putting less than three weeks between the two projects, and Season 4 is already being teased by Ritchson himself as the most action packed season yet.
That is not the only new project on his plate either. Ritchson was recently announced as the star of an upcoming Netflix action movie titled Maelstrom, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Both Collet-Serra and Ritchson have delivered hits for Netflix before, with Collet-Serra’s Carry-On ranking as the third most watched Netflix original film of all time with 172 million views, while Ritchson’s War Machine sits ninth on that same list with nearly 140 million views.
Ritchson is also set to return for a War Machine sequel, meaning ‘Motor City’ is just one piece of a much larger run for the actor heading into the back half of 2026. It is easy to see why comparisons are being drawn to other action stars who built a whole persona around this kind of physical, stripped down storytelling.
