Alan Ritchson in Talks to Join DCU in “Messier” New Role
Alan Ritchson is in talks to join James Gunn’s DC Universe in a new and “messier” role, the actor revealed in a recent interview with ScreenRant while promoting his upcoming movie, Playdate.
Ritchson, known for playing Aquaman on Smallville and Hawk on Titans, said he’s looking to take on a character that’s less of a traditional hero.
“Yeah. Yes, that’s the conversation that I’ve been having with them is like, ‘I want to play somebody a little messier.’ And I told them, I said, if I’m going to do this, I described to them the kind of personality that I’d want to play and what that would mean to their world, and I think it’s something everybody wants to see right now over there,” Ritchson explained. “So yes, I want to play somebody a little dirtier than your typical clean-cut protagonist.”
Fans have long considered Ritchson a strong candidate to play Batman in the DCU. He previously discussed the role with Gunn but clarified in an August interview with Variety that he doesn’t expect to become Bruce Wayne anytime soon. “Words have been exchanged about Batman. But I strongly don’t think that Batman is in my future. I do think there is something in my future with DC. And I would like that to remain true,” he said.
It’s not yet clear which character Ritchson may play in the DCU. The franchise has a history of introducing characters through TV projects before bringing them to the big screen, so a smaller debut is possible before a larger role in future films.
