The FX anthology series ‘American Horror Story‘, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, established Jessica Lange as the central performer of its foundational era. Across multiple installments of the television franchise, Lange portrayed distinct women defined by authority, ambition, and survival.

Her work across the anthology garnered multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Each role explored complex family dynamics and tragic history across various distinct American settings.

Margaret Thatcher

The FX

In ‘American Horror Story: 13’, Jessica Lange makes an unexpected appearance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during a surreal underworld sequence. Appearing in the episode ‘Is That All There Is?’, Thatcher is depicted as one of several historical figures consigned to damnation for deeds committed during their lifetimes. Lange pitched the satirical guest portrayal herself, proposing to showrunner Ryan Murphy that the polarizing political figure belonged among the condemned souls. The sequence places the stylized politician alongside other franchise personalities as Elsa Mars presides over the underworld proceedings.

Elsa Mars

The FX

In ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’, Jessica Lange plays Elsa Mars, a German expatriate who manages a struggling carnival troupe in Jupiter, Florida. Elsa recruits performers with physical differences to headline Fräulein Elsa’s Cabinet of Curiosities while fiercely pursuing her personal dream of becoming a Hollywood television star. Behind her theatrical persona, Elsa conceals severe physical trauma stemming from her past in Berlin, where her legs were amputated during the filming of an illicit movie. Her ruthless drive for fame strains her relationships with the carnival troupe and eventually leads her to Hollywood, where her television career culminates in a confrontation with the supernatural entity Edward Mordrake. Lange earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for portraying the cabaret owner.

Constance Langdon

The FX

Constance Langdon serves as the meddlesome neighbor living beside the haunted Los Angeles residence in ‘American Horror Story: Murder House’. Constance spent decades residing in the structure, navigating the deaths of her children Tate, Beauregard, and Adelaide alongside the demise of her unfaithful husband. Throughout the debut installment, Constance schemes to maintain access to the property and ultimately takes custody of her grandson Michael, who is prophesied to bring about biblical devastation. Lange reprised the role in ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’, which chronicles Constance raising the young Antichrist before choosing to end her own life within the residence to remain as a spirit beside her deceased children. The performance earned Lange both a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie and a Golden Globe Award.

Fiona Goode

The FX

Introduced in ‘American Horror Story: Coven’, Fiona Goode is the reigning Supreme witch of the Salem lineage residing in New Orleans. Facing terminal cancer and declining magical abilities as a successor rises, Fiona returns to Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies to regain her youth and maintain her authority. Her quest for immortality sparks conflicts with voodoo queen Marie Laveau and a guild of witch hunters, while straining her contentious relationship with her daughter, Cordelia Foxx. Fiona eliminates rival young witches to preserve her reign before ultimately succumbing to her illness, waking up in an afterlife overseen by the Axeman. Lange won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her work in the role.

Sister Jude Martin

The FX

In ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’, Jessica Lange portrays Sister Jude Martin, the stern administrator of Briarcliff Manor, a Massachusetts psychiatric hospital. Driven by guilt over a past hit-and-run accident, Jude enforces strict religious discipline at the asylum while harboring unexpressed feelings for Monsignor Timothy Howard. When demonic possession and institutional corruption strip away her authority, Jude is stripped of her administrative status, renamed Betty Drake, and committed as an inmate within Briarcliff. Following the eventual closure of the facility, former patient Kit Walker takes the ailing Jude into his home, allowing her to spend her final months in peace with his family. Lange garnered a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie as well as a Screen Actors Guild nomination for the role.
