All of John Carroll Lynch’s ‘American Horror Story’ Characters, Ranked
Across multiple seasons of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series ‘American Horror Story‘, John Carroll Lynch has established himself as one of the franchise’s most chilling and versatile performers.
The veteran character actor brings a distinct blend of towering physical intimidation and profound emotional pathos to each of his terrifying roles. From nightmarish slasher homages to real-world killers, his work continues to leave an indelible mark on horror television.
Larry Bitterman
In the anthology spinoff series ‘American Horror Stories’, John Carroll Lynch portrays Larry Bitterman, a deranged and egotistical filmmaker obsessed with extreme psychological horror. Bitterman spends years developing a cursed independent film titled ‘Rabbit Rabbit’, embedding it with subliminal acoustic frequencies and mind-altering visual triggers designed to induce homicidal frenzy in audiences. After serving prison time when an early screening results in a deadly theater massacre, he resurfaces decades later to orchestrate a special drive-in screening and recreate the violent pandemonium. When surviving teenagers confront and fatally wound him at his hideout, Bitterman gleefully gloats that he has already licensed the fatal movie to a global streaming platform. Lynch infuses the character with manic megalomania, turning a cynical cinematic purist into an unrepentant agent of pure societal destruction.
John Wayne Gacy
In ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’, John Carroll Lynch takes on the chilling role of real-life serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The character arrives at the Hotel Cortez as an invited spirit to take part in the annual Devil’s Night dinner hosted by hotel founder James Patrick March. Appearing in his notorious clown makeup, Gacy shares cocktails and morbid philosophies alongside other infamous historical figures such as Aileen Wuornos and Jeffrey Dahmer. He later participates in the ritualistic slaughter of an innocent victim brought into the hotel room to conclude the macabre festivities. Lynch’s performance captures the jarring contrast between polite Midwestern sociability and horrific cruelty.
Benjamin Richter
In ‘American Horror Story: 1984’, John Carroll Lynch portrays Benjamin Richter, a haunted Camp Redwood groundskeeper infamous as the urban legend Mr. Jingles. Initially framed as a remorseless mass murderer returning to butcher counselors after escaping a psychiatric institution, his narrative deepens as dark truths come to light. Flashbacks reveal that Richter was framed for the camp massacre by Margaret Booth and subjected to brutal medical treatments that shattered his sanity. Upon learning the truth, Richter abandons his violent path, starts a quiet family life, and eventually returns to the haunted grounds to protect his infant son from demonic evil. Richter’s multi-episode journey transforms him from a terrifying tribute to retro slasher icons into a deeply sympathetic, redemptive figure.
Twisty the Clown
John Carroll Lynch made his unforgettable debut in the franchise as Twisty the Clown in ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’. Dressed in a grimy clown suit and wearing a wide, nightmarish grinning prosthetic to conceal severe facial trauma, Twisty silently terrorizes the town of Jupiter, Florida. Behind the terrifying abductions and brutal homicides lies a deeply heartbreaking past involving false accusations from jealous carnival peers, profound isolation, and a failed suicide attempt. His twisted mission stems from a childlike, distorted desire to rescue captives from strict parental figures rather than malicious wickedness. Lynch delivers an astonishing masterclass in physical storytelling and expressive eye acting that turns Twisty into the franchise’s definitive horror icon.
