Amazon MGM Studios is bringing back one of its most famous sci-fi properties, giving a full-series order to a new Stargate show for Prime Video. The information comes from Amazon MGM Studios, which confirmed the news as the company continues to expand its lineup of shows from MGM’s well-known library.

The new Stargate series will be led by Martin Gero, who has a long history with the franchise and also created the NBC drama Blindspot. Gero will handle nearly everything behind the scenes, from creating and writing the show to serving as executive producer and showrunner. He will be joined by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, along with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who worked on the original Stargate movie released in 1994. Longtime franchise creative leads Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will act as consulting producers.

Gero shared how personal the project is for him. “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis… Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” he said.

He added that he was excited to help bring the franchise into a new era and thanked longtime fans for keeping interest alive. “For those who’ve kept the gate active… this one’s for you,” he said, promising that new viewers will also get “something extraordinary.”

The Stargate universe has been around for more than 30 years. It started with Emmerich’s film, then grew into several TV series, including SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, plus an animated series and a web series. All versions revolve around a giant ancient device that opens a wormhole and lets characters travel instantly across space.

Amazon’s interest in reviving MGM franchises began after the company bought the studio in 2022 for $8.5 billion. Since then, the streamer has ordered several projects based on MGM titles, including a Legally Blonde prequel series, a new Tomb Raider show starring Sophie Turner, and a Barbershop series. Other MGM properties, like Poltergeist, are also being developed.

Nick Pepper, who oversees U.S. scripted streaming projects at Amazon MGM Studios, praised the revival. He called Stargate an iconic franchise that has connected with fans for generations. “We’re honored to open this next gate… one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future,” he said.

This new Stargate project also comes not long after Peter Friedlander became the new Head of Global TV at Amazon MGM Studios. Gero, meanwhile, continues to build on his long TV résumé, which includes work on Quantum Leap, Kung Fu, and multiple Stargate series.
