Amazon’s Most Talked-About Show Just Dropped a Huge Season 3 Reveal
Amazon just dropped some big news about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The show’s third season has officially started production, and the announcement came with a short teaser showing none other than Sauron’s crown, setting the tone for what’s coming next.
The new season is set years after the events of Season 2 and takes place during the intense war between the Elves and the Dark Lord Sauron.
This is when Sauron is crafting the One Ring, the key to gaining ultimate control over Middle-earth. The series is inspired by the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and dives deep into the Second Age, a time long before Frodo, Aragorn, or the Fellowship.
Amazon Studios is teaming up again with New Line Cinema to bring the third season to life. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are back as showrunners. According to Variety, work on Season 3’s script began back in October 2024, and Amazon officially confirmed the season in February 2025. Production began in mid-May in the UK.
Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Stefan Schwartz are directing multiple episodes each. Brändström and Hamri also worked on earlier seasons, while Schwartz is new to the show. Brändström has also taken on an executive producer role this time around.
Writers for Season 3 include Payne, McKay, Justin Doble, Ben Tagoe, Ava Wong Davies, Constance Cheng, Jonathan Wilson, Griff Jones, and Sarah Anson. The writers have mapped out each season to center around big moments from Tolkien’s lore, and this season will focus heavily on the rise of Sauron and the forging of the One Ring.
Casting is getting interesting too. Jamie Campbell Bower joined as a series regular, playing a high-born knight code-named “Arlen,” who might end up being a romantic interest for Galadriel. Eddie Marsan is also part of the cast in a mysterious role called “Dromm,” which reportedly required a Scottish accent, leading fans to speculate he could be related to Durin IV. Andrew Richardson was also announced as a series regular, while Zubin Varla and Adam Young have recurring roles.
Filming has moved from Bray Film Studios in Berkshire, where Season 2 was shot, to Shepperton Studios in Surrey. Amazon had signed a long-term deal to use the Shepperton facilities starting in 2022, but they weren’t ready in time for the second season.
Now that the studios are up and running, the production team made the move official earlier this year. Pre-production was already in motion by February, and filming kicked off around mid-May 2025.
The new season of The Rings of Power will stream on Amazon Prime Video, though a release date hasn’t been confirmed yet. If the short teaser is anything to go by, it looks like things are about to get darker, and bloodier, in Middle-earth.
