Created by Megan Park and executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the duo behind ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘The O.C.’, the series blends grief, adoption, and identity against the backdrop of an Ontario island community.

The show centers on 17-year-old Annie Jacobson, who inherits an island from her estranged grandfather alongside her twin brother Connor, only to arrive and find another girl, Ramona, already living there and claiming it as her own. What starts as a dispute over property quickly spirals into a summer of unexpected family revelations, blossoming romance, and long-buried truths about the sisters’ shared mother, Goldie.

The central mystery driving the back half of the season is the question of who fathered Ramona, and the Season 1 finale delivers its answer with a gut-punch twist. Ramona initially suspects that Joe, the marina owner who once had a relationship with Annie’s mother, is her biological father, a belief that fuels much of her resentment since she was raised by her grandfather after everyone else stepped away. That assumption gets flipped on its head once a DNA test enters the picture.

Reception to the finale has been notably divided among critics covering the show. One review called the show excellent overall, noting that it sticks the landing on its ending surprise even as it speeds a bit too quickly toward its resolution, while another pointed to Annie’s relationship with Ramona as the real emotional gravity of the series. That same review flagged the back half’s reliance on tearful, drawn-out explanations of family secrets rather than a flashback episode that might have clarified the family history more naturally.

Not everyone was won over by the ride, either. Harsher takes have called out the season’s messy opening stretch, even as most agree the show eventually found its footing heading into its emotional final scenes.
