AMC Theatres Breaks 106-Year Record as 10.2 Million Moviegoers Flood Cinemas
Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has arrived with a massive worldwide opening, proving once again that audiences are still showing up for major superhero films.
The movie earned $927 million during its debut weekend across 67 international markets, making it the second-biggest opening weekend in box office history. The only movie ahead of it is Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $1.2 billion globally in 2019.
The huge debut puts Spider-Man: Brand New Day among the biggest theatrical launches ever and gives Marvel another major success at the global box office. The film also came close to breaking the domestic opening weekend record in North America.
According to industry box office data, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $355 million from 4,487 theaters in the United States and Canada. That number makes it the second-highest domestic opening weekend of all time, narrowly missing Avengers: Endgame’s record of $357.1 million from April 2019.
The difference between the two films was extremely small, showing just how strong the demand was for the latest Spider-Man adventure. While Endgame managed to keep the top spot, Spider-Man: Brand New Day still delivered one of the biggest launches the industry has ever seen.
The success of the film also helped create a major boost for movie theaters. AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, reported that 10.2 million people visited its locations over a five-day period. The company said the weekend became “the highest weekend revenue mark in the company’s 106-year history.”
Other theater chains also saw record results. Cinemark and Marcus Theatres reported similarly strong weekends, showing that the Spider-Man release helped bring large crowds back to cinemas.
The strong performance comes at an important time for the movie business. After years of changes caused by streaming growth and shifting audience habits, studios and theaters have been looking for major releases that can bring people back to the big screen. Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to be one of those films.
The movie’s opening also highlights the continued popularity of Spider-Man as one of Marvel’s most recognizable characters. The franchise has remained successful across multiple generations, with audiences continuing to support new versions of the hero.

The latest film is part of Sony and Marvel’s ongoing partnership and continues the story of the character in a new chapter. The movie’s massive opening suggests that fans remain highly interested in seeing Spider-Man stories in theaters rather than waiting for streaming releases.
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day also adds to a strong period for major theatrical releases. Universal’s The Odyssey, another major release currently performing well, has already crossed the $900 million mark worldwide after three weekends. However, Spider-Man’s opening weekend remains the biggest story because of the speed and scale of its launch.
With nearly $1 billion earned in just a few days, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made a powerful statement at the box office. The film has not only become one of the biggest openings in movie history but has also shown that audiences are still willing to return to theaters for major cinematic events.
