‘American Horror Story: 13’ Episodes 4, 5 & 6 Recap: Cordelia’s Death, Constance’s Devil Deal and That Ending, Explained
The latest ‘American Horror Story: 13‘ recap lands as the franchise rides its biggest streaming wave in years. The milestone season premiered on Sept. 24, and TheWrap reports it drew more than 4 million global views in its first 4 days. That makes it Ryan Murphy’s biggest streaming launch to date on Hulu and Disney+.
The premiere also grew 50% over ‘Delicate’ and nearly doubled the performance of ‘NYC’ and ‘Double Feature’. Viewers have shown up for the crossover chaos, which follows Ben (Joey Pollari), a plane crash survivor haunted by the number 13 and looked after by Constance (Jessica Lange). Beneath the Apollyon building, a portal to hell keeps churning.
The newest batch of episodes turned that slow burn into a bonfire. A satanic ritual, a mysterious brand on Ben’s body and a Devil’s Night ambush all collide, and by the end, Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson) appears to be dead on the floor of Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Here is how it all played out.
“Is That All There Is?” opens with Ben waking to find Mr. Nas, who force-feeds him black goo from an ornate chalice and appears in a younger, blonder form (Paul Anthony Kelly). Downstairs, Elsa Mars (Lange) performs Peggy Lee’s 1969 hit with her old ‘Freak Show’ band, including Mat Fraser as Paul the Illustrated Seal.
Wilhelmina Venable (Paulson) then has Elsa announce the women being tossed into a fiery pit as sacrifices. They include Hypodermic Sally, Eva Braun, Wallis Simpson, Ayn Rand, Brigitte Bardot, Catherine the Great, Mamie Eisenhower, Elena Ceaușescu, Jezebel, Tuberculosis Karen, Margaret Thatcher and Elizabeth Short (Mena Suvari). The count comes up 1 short, so Venable throws herself in as the 13th sacrifice.

The next morning, Constance and Mr. Phibes (John Waters) fill in the blanks. Satan let his son, Mr. Nas, drink from the chalice and wanted extra sacrifices for the occasion. Constance reveals that as Nas’ favorite sinner, she was offered the chance to be a mother again, and a kiss sealed the deal. Her soul now belongs to him, and Tate and Addie are back among the living.
Phibes also checks Nas’ biomarkers and notes he is just 4 points shy of his awakening goal of 100. In other words, the new dawn is near, and more sacrifices are likely coming.
“Date Night” shifts to Ben’s apartment, where Ashley (Elle Chapman), another plane crash survivor, comes over for dinner. She reveals this was not her first brush with death. At a May 2020 family wedding in New Jersey, Piggy Man, the killer from ‘Roanoke’, slaughtered 13 people while she escaped.
The pair bond over a shared terror of the number 13, and Ben shares that he was born on Friday the 13th and that his mother died in childbirth. He adds that he was raised by people who seemed to worship him before landing in foster care. After they sleep together, Ashley discovers “616” branded on his lower back. Chapman has said she couldn’t share any hints about what it means.

“The Return of Devil’s Night” starts with James March (Evan Peters) picking up Jeffrey Dahmer (Seth Gabel) in a self-driving Waymo. They marvel at 2026 technology while gathering the Cortez Devils, a group that also includes Richard Ramirez (Zach Villa).
At the academy, Cordelia grows alarmed by how quickly her young witches are developing new powers, especially Morwenna (Alex Consani), who revives a dead amphibian. She even throws Morwenna against the ceiling, a callback to a similar move by Fiona in ‘Coven’. Cordelia begins to wonder whether she needs to be more like her mother to protect the coven.
The coven, now 13 strong, uses a spirit board to summon Fiona, and the pointer moves. Cordelia sends everyone upstairs to face her mother alone, but the visitor is March. With his killers behind him and Ophelia (Avantika) distracting her, Cordelia takes a scythe to the back of the head and collapses.
TVLine predicts Cordelia will spend time in limbo, enough for a face-to-face reunion with Fiona, before rising stronger. The episode also leaves the other 12 witches in the Cortez Devils’ crosshairs, which raises the stakes for Morwenna and everyone else.
Who do you think will survive the attack at Miss Robichaux’s Academy?
