‘American Horror Story’ Season 13’s New Look Has Been Revealed: Here’s What We Know About the Plot, Cast, and Release Date

Ryan Murphy’s genre-defining anthology series has spent over a decade reinventing itself season after season, and its milestone thirteenth chapter is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious yet. After more than a decade of murder houses, covens, and apocalyptic threats, the franchise is preparing to bring together nearly every corner of its twisted universe for one massive reunion.

That reunion has been building steadily since casting announcements first began trickling out last Halloween, teasing a lineup of returning fan favorites unlike anything the series has attempted before. With the season’s premiere now rapidly approaching, FX has unveiled a striking new poster that’s giving fans their latest visual tease ahead of the show’s return.

The image shows a figure clad head-to-toe in black leather, standing before a wilting black sunflower, with the number 13 emblazoned in red across their back. It’s a fittingly ominous piece of key art for a season that’s simply titled ’13,’ with FX confirming the premiere date of September 24 on both FX and Hulu.

Despite early speculation that this new installment would function as a direct sequel to ‘Coven,’ series co-creator Ryan Murphy has since clarified that the season’s true focus centers on the number thirteen itself rather than any single previous storyline. According to Murphy, the season instead functions as an Avengers-style crossover pulling together elements from across the anthology’s entire run rather than continuing one specific narrative thread.

FX’s official logline describes the season as “an unrivaled 13th installment that will do justice to everyone’s most feared number,” bringing together an all-star cast, many of whom are reprising fan-favorite roles from across the franchise’s history. The season will consist of 13 half-episodes, with the first two weeks each delivering three episodes before settling into a twice-weekly release pattern leading up to the October 29 finale.

The scale of returning talent for this season is staggering even by ‘American Horror Story’ standards. Evan Peters returns to tackle five separate characters, while Sarah Paulson is set to portray somewhere between six and seven roles across the season’s run. Jessica Lange, who previously said she had no interest in returning to the franchise, also comes back to reprise four of her most iconic characters, including Constance Langdon.

Rounding out the veteran-heavy ensemble are Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Frances Conroy, and Joey Pollari, alongside a wave of newcomers including Alex Consani, Avantika, Madelaine Petsch, and legendary filmmaker John Waters. Notably absent is Ariana Grande, who was originally cast for the season but had to step away due to a scheduling conflict with her Eternal Sunshine tour, though Murphy has indicated he’d welcome her back in a future installment.

‘American Horror Story: 13’ officially premieres Thursday, September 24 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, airing on FX before becoming available on Hulu domestically and streaming internationally via Disney+. Filming on the season wrapped in late July after beginning production in April, giving the show a relatively tight turnaround heading into its fall premiere.

With a franchise that’s generated more than 700 million streaming hours worldwide since its 2011 debut, expectations are running high for this milestone season to deliver a fitting tribute to everything that’s made ‘American Horror Story‘ a horror television institution. Given the sheer scale of returning characters and storylines being woven together, this crossover-style approach could prove to be one of the most rewarding seasons yet for longtime fans of the anthology.
