Andrew Garfield Finally Addresses His Possible Spider-Man Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Multiverse speculation has become something of a permanent fixture in modern superhero fandom, with every new Marvel project sparking fresh theories about who might unexpectedly show up. Few actors have found themselves at the center of that speculation cycle quite as often as Andrew Garfield, whose Spider-Man made a triumphant, tearjerking comeback in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’

That 2021 appearance reignited fan love for Garfield’s take on Peter Parker, a character he’d only played twice before in 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and its 2014 sequel. Since then, any hint of a major multiversal Marvel event has been enough to send fans searching for clues about whether Garfield might pull on the mask one more time.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ looming as one of the most anticipated crossover events in franchise history, that speculation reached a fever pitch once again. Garfield has now addressed the rumors head-on, firmly stating that he will not be returning as Spider-Man for the film.

Speaking at the premiere of his historical action drama ‘The Uprising’ at the DGA in West Hollywood, Garfield made his position unambiguous when asked directly about his involvement in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Despite the firm denial, Garfield left just enough wiggle room to keep fans guessing about what audiences might eventually see once the film actually releases.

“You’ll find out I suppose, one way or another,” Garfield said, according to Variety. That kind of playful ambiguity has become something of a signature move for actors navigating the notoriously tight-lipped culture surrounding major Marvel releases, and it’s unlikely to fully put the rumors to rest.

Garfield’s comments arrive amid a broader wave of questions surrounding the film’s ensemble, as Marvel Studios continues to keep most casting details close to the chest ahead of the movie’s release. With Robert Downey Jr. set to headline as Doctor Doom, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already generated enormous anticipation regardless of which additional legacy characters ultimately make an appearance.

This isn’t the first time Garfield has publicly denied involvement in a major Marvel project, only for those denials to later prove misleading. Ahead of ‘No Way Home’s’ release, Garfield famously and repeatedly denied any knowledge of the film, statements that turned out to be carefully orchestrated misdirection meant to protect the movie’s biggest surprise.

That history has made fans understandably skeptical of any flat denial from Garfield regarding future Marvel appearances, even when he insists there’s nothing more to the story this time around. Whether his latest comments hold up or eventually get walked back closer to the film’s release remains to be seen.

Beyond the ongoing Garfield speculation, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continues to build buzz through other unconfirmed casting rumors, including recent teases involving Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool and Wolverine potentially factoring into the story. A teaser that played at D23 featured Jackman jokingly appealing to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to include the characters, further fueling fan theories about the film’s scope.

For now, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the full cast list for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as the film continues moving toward its eventual release. Fans will simply have to wait and see whether Garfield’s denial holds true, or whether his Spider-Man finds his way back into the multiverse once again.
