Andrew Garfield Reveals His One Condition for Returning as Spider-Man
Since his surprise appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have continued to wonder if Garfield’s version of Peter Parker could come back for another Marvel project. Every new Spider-Man movie brings fresh rumors, with many fans hoping to see him wear the suit again.
During a recent appearance on The Playlist’s “The Discourse” podcast with Mike DeAngelo, Garfield was asked what kind of story would convince him to return as Spider-Man. The actor was on the show to talk about his new family fantasy film The Magic Faraway Tree, where he stars alongside Claire Foy.
The question came up because of ongoing online rumors that Garfield could appear in future Spider-Man movies, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. DeAngelo pointed out how fans often believe Garfield has secretly filmed another Marvel appearance whenever a new project is announced.
Garfield explained that he does not have a clear idea of what would bring him back, but he knows it would have to be something very different from what audiences have already seen.
“I don’t know. I really don’t know. I would need it to be very, very odd. I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional and almost—I wouldn’t say boring—but I would want it to be just completely unexpected, like a genre of Spider-Man that you’ve never seen before, that feels very left field.”
The actor then suggested one unusual idea that could make his version of Spider-Man feel fresh. “Maybe like a road trip movie.”
A Spider-Man road trip film would be unlike anything Marvel has done before. Instead of focusing on huge battles, villains, or multiverse events, the story could explore Peter Parker in a more personal and unexpected way.
Garfield’s comments match what he has said in the past about returning to the character. While he has never completely ruled out playing Spider-Man again, he has made it clear that he does not want to return just for the sake of nostalgia. He wants a story that has a real reason to exist.
His return in Spider-Man: No Way Home already gave fans a new look at his Peter Parker. The movie allowed his character to deal with the loss and pain that followed the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, giving him a chance at emotional closure.
Because of that, another appearance would need to bring something new instead of simply repeating the same idea. Garfield appears interested in a project that takes a creative risk and shows audiences a side of Spider-Man they have never experienced before.
Whether Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures would actually make a strange Spider-Man road trip movie remains unknown. However, Garfield’s answer has given fans a new possibility to discuss.
For now, the actor continues to focus on other projects, including The Magic Faraway Tree, directed by Ben Gregor and written by Simon Farnaby. The film follows a family that moves to the English countryside and discovers a magical tree that takes them to different fantasy worlds. Garfield plays Tim, the father of the family, alongside Claire Foy as Polly.
