Anne Hathaway Commands the Spotlight in First Trailer for A24’s Darkly Glamorous ‘Mother Mary’
2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for Anne Hathaway. The Oscar-winning actress has five very different movies coming out between April and October, and she’s showing off a new side of her talent with each one.
The first to hit theaters is David Lowery’s Mother Mary, a psychological horror with a musical twist. This marks Hathaway’s return to musical performance since her role in the 2012 Les Misérables film.
In Mother Mary, Hathaway plays the title character, a struggling musician who reconnects with an old friend and fashion designer, Sam, played by Michaela Coel. Sam promises to lift Mary’s spirits with a brand-new wardrobe, though tensions remain. “Are you making me a hate dress?” Mary asks in a moment that highlights the mix of humor and drama in the story. Hunter Schaefer also appears as Sam’s assistant, helping with the complete makeover of the singer.
The film’s soundtrack leans toward ethereal, power synth pop. The music is crafted by FKA Twigs, who also appears in the movie, and the duo of Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Clips from the trailer show Hathaway performing onstage, mixing the bright energy of pop music with the eerie, surreal elements of Lowery’s horror storytelling.
Mother Mary opens in New York and Los Angeles on April 17, and it hits theaters nationwide on April 24. Following this, Hathaway has four more releases lined up: The Devil Wears Prada 2 on May 1, The Odyssey on July 17, The End of Oak Street on August 14, and Verity on October 2.
With such a diverse slate of films, Hathaway could make a serious awards push in 2027. Mother Mary’s songs are potential contenders for Best Original Song at the Oscars. Hathaway herself may compete for Best Actress for both Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2, though she’ll face tough competition from Meryl Streep in the latter.
It’s clear that Anne Hathaway is using 2026 to show her range, balancing horror, musical performance, drama, and comedy. Mother Mary looks like a fresh and intriguing addition to her career, blending style, music, and suspense in a way only Hathaway could pull off.
