Annette Bening Breaks Silence on ‘Dutton Ranch’ Becoming a Record-Breaking Hit Ahead of Season 2 Return
Annette Bening is celebrating the huge response to Paramount+’s ‘Dutton Ranch’ and says it has been exciting to see so many people connect with the Yellowstone spinoff.
The five-time Oscar nominee plays Beulah Jackson, the powerful owner of the 10 Pedal Ranch in Rio Paloma, Texas. Her character enters the story as a major rival to Kelly Reilly’s Beth and Cole Hauser’s Rip, creating tension as the two sides battle over control of the ranch and cattle business. However, as the first season progressed, Beulah’s role became more complicated, showing there was more to her than just being an enemy.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan while promoting her Apple TV+ series ‘Lucky,’ Bening opened up about the success of ‘Dutton Ranch’ and how different the experience has been compared to many of her previous projects.
The actress explained that while she has always been proud of her work, it is rare for a project to reach such a large audience. “A lot of what we do, people don’t really see. Doing something that a lot of people actually see is really enjoyable,” Bening said.
She added that seeing viewers enjoy the show has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. “I also want people to have a good time, enjoy the show and be entertained. That’s fun for me,” she said.
Bening also compared her character Beulah Jackson to another role she is playing, Priscilla Matheson, a character from ‘Lucky.’ While both women have power and influence, Bening believes they are very different people. She explained that Beulah has flaws but still has a sense of guilt and responsibility, unlike Priscilla.
“Beulah has her issues, but she feels really bad about what happens. Priscilla does to a degree, but then, if she has to sacrifice her son? Well, that happens,” Bening explained.
The success of ‘Dutton Ranch’ has been a major win for the Yellowstone universe following the end of the original series. The spinoff quickly became one of Paramount+’s biggest hits, attracting both longtime fans of Taylor Sheridan’s franchise and new viewers.
The series earned strong reviews as well, receiving an 89% “Certified Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also became Paramount+’s biggest original series premiere and remained one of the platform’s most-watched shows throughout its first season.
Because of that success, Paramount+ renewed ‘Dutton Ranch’ for a second season before the first season had even finished airing. Bening said she does not have any official details to share about what comes next, but fans are already eager to see how Beulah’s story continues after the dramatic season 1 finale.
The future of Beulah Jackson is especially interesting after the first season left several major questions unanswered. With her family facing major changes and her ranch empire in a difficult position, season 2 could push the character into a very different direction.
