Anya Taylor-Joy Brings Major Heat to the London ‘Lucky’ Photocall Ahead of Her Apple TV Return

Anya Taylor-Joy has built her career on disappearing into morally slippery characters, from a chess prodigy with a pill addiction to a warlord’s most trusted enforcer. That reputation for transformation is exactly what makes her latest project feel like such a natural fit for her evolving résumé.

That project is ‘Lucky,’ Apple TV’s upcoming limited series adapted from Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel, which finally arrives on the platform later this month. Taylor-Joy stars as the title character, a con artist forced into hiding after a multi-million dollar heist collapses, pursued simultaneously by the FBI and a ruthless crime boss.

With the premiere just days away, Taylor-Joy stepped out for the show’s official photocall in London, held at Raffles London at The OWO under a rare summer heatwave. She wore a pale blue and black lace dress from Tom Ford’s Spring collection, finished with black sandals and Tiffany and Co jewelry, having previously worn a longer black version of the same design at the Marrakech International Film Festival closing ceremony back in December.

The look leaned into the sheer, lingerie inspired silhouettes that have defined much of Tom Ford’s recent collection, giving the appearance an unexpectedly fitting connection to a character built entirely around reinvention and disguise. Between switching identities, names, and even wigs throughout the series, Lucky Armstrong spends much of the show staying one step ahead of everyone hunting her down.

Taylor-Joy has described the role as a departure from the type of con artist stories that first drew her to the genre. Speaking with Esquire India about her long standing love of con movies, she explained that she has always been drawn to the slick, stylish version of that world popularized by actors like George Clooney, but that Lucky offered something different from those familiar archetypes.

She went on to describe the character as someone constantly forced to move and take from others simply to survive, calling it a version of the con artist story she had not previously seen explored on screen. That distinction seems to have shaped much of her approach to the physically demanding role, which reportedly included overnight shoots at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas running from eleven at night until eleven the next morning.

The series carries a stacked supporting cast alongside Taylor-Joy, including Annette Bening as Lucky’s formidable mother-in-law and the head of the criminal organization hunting her, along with Timothy Olyphant as her father, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Drew Starkey as her husband Cary. Jonathan Tropper created the series and serves as co-showrunner alongside Cassie Pappas, with Jonathan Van Tulleken directing the pilot and additional episodes.

Reese Witherspoon executive produces through her Hello Sunshine banner, continuing her track record of adapting buzzy bestsellers for television, while Taylor-Joy also executive produces the series through her own Ladykiller production company. That level of creative involvement adds another layer to what already looks like one of the more anticipated limited series of the summer.

‘Lucky’ premieres its first two episodes on Apple TV on July 15, with the remaining installments rolling out weekly through August 19. Between the starry ensemble and Taylor-Joy’s growing reputation for disappearing into morally complicated roles, the series looks poised to be one of the platform’s bigger conversations once it finally arrives.
