Taylor-Joy admitted that choosing wasn’t easy. “The last time I did this I panicked so hard, like I nearly cried,” she said with a laugh. But this time she was more certain, repeating her list with confidence: “The Handmaiden, Arrival, still Almost Famous, In the Mood for Love.”
Each of these films holds a strong reputation with both critics and audiences. Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden is often praised for its bold storytelling and stunning visuals.
Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival is remembered as one of the most acclaimed modern sci-fi films. Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous remains a classic in coming-of-age cinema. Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love is considered one of the greatest love stories in world cinema.
Taylor-Joy’s choices show her appreciation for films that are not only beloved but also influential in different genres.
Her film Sacrifice, directed by Romain Gavras, premiered at TIFF in the Special Presentations section. The movie is an action-adventure comedy with a dark twist, where a movie star and two others are kidnapped by a radical group.
The cast includes Chris Evans, Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, John Malkovich, and Charli XCX, among others. Taylor-Joy plays Joan, a character driven by a mission to save humanity.
Production took place across Greece, Bulgaria, and Iceland, wrapping at the end of 2024. Critics have described Sacrifice as bold and chaotic, with an unusual blend of comedy and action.
