Apple TV Renews Fan-Favorite Historical Drama for Season 3
Apple TV+ is bringing back its historical drama The Buccaneers for a third season.
The renewal comes two months after the romantic period show ended its second season with a dramatic cliffhanger that left fans eager for answers. The news was first reported by Deadline.
The Buccaneers is inspired by Edith Wharton’s final and unfinished novel and follows five lively American women, Nan, Conchita, Mabel, Lizzy, and Jinny, who shake up London’s high society in the 1870s.
In the second season, the group faced heartbreak, jealousy, motherhood, and legal troubles as Nan, now the Duchess of Tintagel, remained torn between her husband Theo, the Duke of Tintagel, and his best friend Guy, who is also her true love.
Season 2 ended with Theo giving up his title to divorce Nan and marry Lizzy, while Nan secretly revealed to Lizzy that she was pregnant with Theo’s child. She then fled from Tintagel, leaving behind everything she knew.
“Absolutely everything’s up for grabs, and none of the things that she thought were certain are certain anymore, except for the fact that [Nan]’s got [Theo]’s child in her stomach, and he doesn’t know about it,” said creator and showrunner Katherine Jakeways in an interview with Deadline after the finale.
“Suddenly, she’s got freedom from being a Duchess, freedom from her marriage, and freedom from him knowing about this baby, giving her a carte blanche to make her own decision.”
Season 3 will continue Nan’s story and explore what happens now that she’s free. The creative team also plans to introduce a new character, Kit, Theo’s secret half-brother, who was called upon in the Season 2 finale to take over as the new Duke of Tintagel.
The Buccaneers mixes lavish period settings with modern touches like Taylor Swift songs. While it hasn’t become one of Apple TV+’s biggest hits, it has earned positive reviews from critics, with a 72% average on Rotten Tomatoes, and has built a loyal fan base. The show also appeared a few times on Luminate’s Top 50 TV rankings over the summer.
Jakeways expressed her excitement about returning for another season, saying, “We couldn’t be more delighted to be lacing up our corsets, slipping on our ball gowns and running breathless across the cliffs of Tintagel for the third time to see what passionate adventures our beloved Buccaneers get up to next. Huge thanks to Apple TV+ and also to the devoted viewers for loving the show as much as we do.”
