Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo made a quiet entrance at the New York premiere of Wicked: For Good, choosing to stay out of interviews for the night. People Magazine reported that Erivo had lost her voice, and Universal confirmed this was the only reason the pair skipped speaking with the press.

Both actors still joined their castmates on the carpet, along with director Jon M. Chu and several stars from the film, including Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh and Ethan Slater. Later on the event livestream, Grande stood beside Erivo and explained why her co-star wasn’t talking. She said, “I’m not letting her speak. She has to rest her voice!”

Grande mentioned how special it felt to celebrate the film in New York, home of the Gershwin Theatre. Erivo added a few quiet words of her own, saying, “It’s really beautiful that we’re finishing here, where it started.” Grande later told viewers that Erivo was doing everything she could to protect her voice, saying, “She’s throat-coating, we’re nourishing the throat. Thank you for understanding. There’s only so much the human body can endure.”

During the carpet walk, one moment stood out when Grande gently asked photographers to stop shouting. The noise had grown loud, and she asked them to keep things calm.
