British actor Marcus Gilbert, best known for playing Arthur in Sam Raimi’s cult classic Army of Darkness, has died at the age of 67 after a long battle with throat cancer. According to the Marcus Gilbert Fansite, he passed away on January 11.

Born in Bristol, England, on July 29, 1958, Gilbert trained at Mountview Theatre School, graduating in 1981. He began his career on stage, performing with the Odyssey Theatre Company and later at Dundee Repertory Theatre and Manchester’s Library Theatre. Gilbert also appeared in over 50 commercials, including the award-winning Lee Jeans campaign Mean Jeans in 1986.

Gilbert made his on-screen debut in the 1983 TV movie The Weather in the Streets and went on to build a diverse career in film and television. He appeared in Rambo III, Biggles: Adventures in Time, Legacy, and A Ghost in Monte Carlo. Horror fans remember him best for Army of Darkness, and he later reprised his role as Arthur in Evil Dead: The Game, introducing the character to a new generation. His TV work included roles on Doctor Who, Murder, She Wrote, Robin of Sherwood, Jonathan Creek, and the adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s Riders.

Beyond acting, Gilbert ran his own production company, Touch the Sky Productions, and in 2004 made a documentary about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. While filming, he visited the Arusha Children’s Trust in Tanzania to support local initiatives.

Marcus Gilbert was married to Dr. Homaa Khan-Gilbert for 28 years until her death in 2020, and they had two children together, Maxi and Aaliya. He is survived by his brother Anthony and his children.

Gilbert leaves behind a legacy of work that spans stage, screen, and even video games. His contributions to horror and genre fans in particular will be remembered for years to come.
