Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation Praises Paramount’s Response to Mark Ruffalo’s Antisemitism Accusation

Corporate merger disputes rarely draw commentary from Holocaust education organizations, but the ongoing fight over Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has managed to pull in voices far beyond the usual entertainment industry players. What started as criticism over consolidation and editorial independence has evolved into a broader conversation about antisemitism, institutional responsibility and where legitimate political criticism ends.

Mark Ruffalo has spent weeks publicly opposing the merger, arguing it would consolidate too much media power under a single family while raising concerns about the underlying business ties involved. That opposition escalated significantly after Ruffalo shared commentary connecting Oracle’s military technology work in Israel to the Ellison family’s involvement in the deal, prompting Paramount to accuse him of invoking antisemitic tropes.

Now, that dispute has drawn a formal statement of support for Paramount’s position from a prominent Holocaust remembrance organization. Jack Simony, president and director general of the nonprofit Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation, issued a statement commending the studio’s handling of the situation, framing it as a meaningful example of institutional accountability.

“Paramount deserves recognition for confronting antisemitic tropes directly and unequivocally,” Simony wrote in a statement, adding that Jewish participation in media has historically been recast as control, and Jewish success reframed as conspiracy, throughout Hollywood’s earliest days. He argued that antisemitism tends to change its vocabulary rather than its underlying structure, and that Ruffalo’s commentary, framed around Israel, a billionaire family, surveillance technology and a warning about future misuse, updated a familiar pattern for the modern era.

Ruffalo has firmly pushed back against the characterization since it first surfaced, calling the accusation “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” in a weekend post on X. He drew a clear distinction between criticizing Israeli government policy, military contractors and specific executives, and expressing hostility toward Jewish people as a group, arguing that legitimate political dialogue was being dishonestly reframed as anti-Israel sentiment.

The dispute traces back to a social media post from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, a Palestinian-led campaign opposing Israel’s occupation that Ruffalo amplified. That post featured comments from Oracle executive vice chair Safra Catz describing the company’s technological assistance to Israel following the October 7 attacks, commentary Ruffalo used to argue the pending merger deserved closer scrutiny given Oracle’s ties to the Ellison family.

Simony’s statement wasn’t an isolated response. Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, also criticized Ruffalo’s comments, adding another prominent voice from a major Jewish advocacy organization to the growing list of critics weighing in on the controversy. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a pro-Israel human rights organization, similarly took to social media over the weekend to commend Paramount for what it described as speaking clearly and directly on the issue.

That collective response from multiple respected Jewish institutional voices has added significant weight to Paramount’s original characterization of Ruffalo’s remarks, even as the actor continues to maintain his position stems from legitimate criticism of corporate and government policy rather than any hostility toward Jewish people broadly.

Ruffalo has remained one of the most vocal celebrity critics of the pending $111 billion Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery deal, consistently framing it as a threat to editorial independence at outlets like CNN and HBO, alongside broader concerns about industry job losses. That advocacy has repeatedly put him at odds with Paramount directly, and this latest controversy marks one of the most serious escalations in that ongoing conflict.

With prominent Jewish organizations now publicly weighing in on opposite conclusions about intent versus impact, the dispute has moved well beyond a simple disagreement over corporate consolidation into a much more complicated conversation about language, historical patterns of antisemitism and where the boundaries of political criticism should sit. Neither side shows signs of backing down, and the involvement of institutions like the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation suggests this particular chapter of the merger fight isn’t cooling down anytime soon.
