Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third film in James Cameron’s epic science fiction series and a direct follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
Cameron co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, based on a story developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The film brings back many familiar faces, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet.
The production of Fire and Ash has been a long journey. Cameron first hinted at sequels in 2006, shortly after the release of the original Avatar, and officially announced multiple follow-ups in 2010. Creating the next chapters required pioneering new visual effects, including advanced underwater performance capture, a technology never fully achieved before. Filming for Fire and Ash began in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and continued for over three years, finishing in late December 2020.
The movie has faced multiple delays, with the latest announcement putting the U.S. release on December 19. Two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are already in development and are expected to release in 2029 and 2031.
