Avatar: Fire and Ash is tracking for a massive opening at the global box office next weekend, with projections suggesting it could earn more than $400 million.

Analysts expect North America to contribute over $100 million, while China could bring in between $85 million and $100 million. The film is also set to have the biggest debut of the year in Germany and will become the highest-grossing imported film of 2025 in India.

Despite the strong projections, director James Cameron previously expressed some uncertainty about the movie’s performance. In a recent appearance on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, he shared his concerns about the current state of theaters and audience habits.

Cameron noted that fewer people are going to cinemas than before the pandemic, estimating attendance at about three-quarters of pre-pandemic levels. Streaming services, he added, have further changed the way audiences watch films.

Cameron also joked about “sequel fatigue,” saying that many viewers are cautious about follow-up films unless they feel deeply connected to the story. “People tend to dismiss sequels unless it’s the third Lord of the Rings film… but that may not be how the public sees it,” he said.

The director hinted at the high cost of making Fire and Ash without revealing exact numbers. “It is one metric f*** ton of money, which means we have to make two metric f**** tons of money to make a profit,” he said. Cameron believes the film will make money but emphasized that its success is key to deciding whether parts four and five will proceed as planned.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in the franchise and was filmed alongside The Way of Water in New Zealand.

Production took years to complete, partly due to the development of new underwater performance-capture technology. The movie has faced several delays and is now set to premiere in December. Future sequels are tentatively scheduled for 2029 and 2031, but Cameron’s comments make it clear their fate depends on this film’s box office results.
