The film first premiered in 2022 and went on to earn over $2.3 billion at the global box office. It became the third highest-grossing film of all time and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated in several other categories, including Best Picture.
Set more than ten years after the original Avatar, the movie follows Jake and Neytiri Sully as they raise their children and face new dangers on Pandora.
The story shows the family’s efforts to survive, the struggles they endure, and the risks they take to protect one another. Much of the action unfolds in the oceans of Pandora, where new Na’vi groups and sea creatures are introduced.
James Cameron directed and produced the film along with longtime collaborator Jon Landau. The cast includes returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, and Kate Winslet. New additions to the story include Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, and Jack Champion.
The screenplay was written by Cameron together with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The story credits also list Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham worked on the film as executive producers.
20th Century Studios described the re-release as a chance to once again “reach new heights and explore undiscovered depths” as audiences return to the world of Pandora in 3D.
