‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Description Teases New Allies as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Prepare for an Unlikely Team-Up

Marvel has been unusually guarded about the story of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ even as it floods the internet with trailers, displays and promo art. Fans have been left to piece together who’s fighting alongside whom, and against whom. A fresh line of official-style copy is now filling in some of the blanks.

The film’s ensemble cast is huge, and its marketing has hinted that many of the heroes won’t see each other as friends right away. That makes the question of how the Avengers fit into the bigger picture more interesting than it might have been in earlier crossovers.

The first description for the Avengers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ describes them as the greatest heroes of Earth, ready to do anything to protect the world from the impending threat, even join forces with new allies. The accompanying image is an ‘Infinity War’-style poster with Thanos looming over a crowd of heroes, which appears to be placeholder art rather than anything new from the film.

The wording is telling. Rather than presenting the Avengers as a self-contained unit, the blurb frames their willingness to partner with outsiders as essential to survival. That fits the broader pitch, with the film’s official synopsis promising heroes from 3 distinct universes on a deadly collision course against an existential threat.

It also lines up with a companion description released the same day, which says Sam Wilson has assembled the Avengers and leads this diverse group of heroes. Together, the 2 blurbs suggest a team under new leadership that knows it can’t win alone.

A Disney event in Italy last December offered the clearest picture of the roster so far. It presented Sam Wilson, Thor, Loki, Shang-Chi, Falcon and Ant-Man together under the banner of ‘the Heroic Avengers.’ Loki’s inclusion was a surprise, and Letitia Wright’s Shuri was grouped with a separate ‘Wakandan Warriors’ team instead.

Other groupings that have circulated include a Thunderbolts-style team featuring Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Ghost, U.S. Agent and Sentry, as well as the Wakandans alongside Namor. One analysis suggests Sam’s Avengers and Yelena’s New Avengers could be separate groups forced to work together when Doctor Doom becomes too big a threat for either to handle alone.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Descriptions Reveal Sam Wilson Has Assembled His Own Avengers, and Falcon Is Ready for Takeoff

Marvel’s footage so far backs up the idea that these alliances won’t come easily. The July trailer shows the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Sam Wilson’s Captain America facing Thor as the studio’s different teams begin to converge. It also includes unexpected clashes, such as Gambit battling Shang-Chi.

An earlier teaser gave a first look at the Fantastic Four teaming up with Wakandans and Namor, a team-up the MCU hasn’t shown before. The First Family arrived from Earth-828 in an ending tag attached to ‘Thunderbolts*,’ and they now appear to be in an uneasy alliance in the face of the looming threat of Doom.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom sits at the heart of everything. The first full trailer, released July 20, revealed his voice and armor, and showed him blocking Thor’s Stormbreaker with just his fingertips. A special look at D23 in August leaned even harder into his tragic backstory.

If rumors are accurate, the final battle could take place in Latveria, with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men fighting Doom’s armada. That hasn’t been confirmed, but it would fit the idea of multiple teams pooling their strength against a common enemy.

Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is also back, confirmed in a December teaser reading ‘Steve Rogers will return.’ His role has fueled questions about how he fits alongside Sam Wilson’s team, and whether he stands with the Avengers or acts independently. Anthony Mackie has said Steve is returning as Steve Rogers rather than as Captain America.

The description for the Avengers doesn’t mention him, which leaves room for surprises. It’s possible the “new allies” in the blurb refers to multiple groups, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and even Steve himself.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, with the Russo brothers directing. It leads straight into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ scheduled for December 17, 2027. With less than 2 months to go, expect more official descriptions, posters and promotional installations as Marvel reveals the pieces of its puzzle.

Which new ally would you most want to see team up with the Avengers in 'Avengers: Doomsday'?
