Marvel has never been shy about turning a release date into an event, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is shaping up to be the biggest test of that strategy yet. The studio keeps feeding fans new footage, and the latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ teaser is a short, sleek reminder that the countdown is on. It also puts a spotlight on a new way of watching the film.

The brief spot leans into branding rather than story, and its message is clear: the movie is coming, and tickets are already available. To understand why that matters, it helps to look at the unusual format battle playing out around the film.

The new 28-second teaser centers on Infinity Vision, Disney’s premium large-format label for the film. It features shimmering blue-and-purple visuals with the Infinity Vision title front and center, and the text tells viewers that the movie arrives in cinemas on Dec. 18 with tickets on sale now.

There are no new story beats here, but the choice to promote the format says plenty. Disney is making a very deliberate push to steer audiences toward its certified auditoriums.

Infinity Vision was announced at CinemaCon in April as a certification for the best screens showing the film. Certified theaters have large screens, laser projection and premium surround audio, and the label is applied to existing premium screens such as Cinemark XD, Regal RX and AMC PRIME. It is not a new projection technology, and IMAX’s chief financial officer reportedly dismissed it as a marketing play.

The reason for its existence is simple. ‘Dune: Part Three’ secured an exclusive deal for IMAX screens during its first three weeks, and it opens on the same day, Dec. 18. That left ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ without access to the format.

Despite the lack of IMAX, early ticket demand looks enormous. Disney has confirmed that domestic presales have crossed $50 million with more than three months to go, and more than 70% of those advance tickets are for Infinity Vision screens. First-day presales reportedly hit $16.5 million from roughly 1,000 premium domestic screens, about double the first-day figure for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

The numbers show how much audiences value premium screens. Premium large-format auditoriums account for about 40% of a typical tentpole’s domestic opening weekend, according to one report.

Marvel has been steadily building momentum. The studio released four character teasers in December, followed by a first full trailer in July, which opens at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters with narration from Doctor Doom. A special look followed on Aug. 14 after a screening at D23, focusing on Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Premium tickets first went on sale on July 20, about five months before release, a few days ahead of Marvel’s CinemaCon presentation. Disney also re-released ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in September as the first title in the Infinity Vision program, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ the first new film to carry it.

The cast is enormous. It includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Pedro Pascal, Florence Pugh and Patrick Stewart, alongside Downey as Doom. Stewart’s Professor X appears in the first trailer in a blinding light that suggests two universes colliding.

At CinemaCon, Joe Russo described Doom as one of the most complex characters in the Marvel universe and said he is always several moves ahead. That tone matches the teasers, which treat the villain as a looming threat.

The film runs about 2 hours and 45 minutes, a figure that could still change before the final cut. That puts it longer than ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at 149 minutes and shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at 181 minutes.

Fans can expect more promotional material as December approaches, along with continued attention on how the film performs against ‘Dune: Part Three’. Marvel also reported its highest viewing hours in Disney+ history in August, with over 420 million hours watched across its titles in a single month, a sign that interest in the brand remains strong.
