Marvel has finally given fans their first real look at Avengers: Doomsday, with the first trailer for the highly anticipated superhero event now revealed. After months of rumors, casting speculation, and fan theories, Marvel Studios has started pulling back the curtain on what is expected to be one of the biggest movies in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to continue the story after Avengers: Endgame and will serve as one of the biggest chapters in Phase Six of the MCU. The movie is being produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures handling its release. Anthony and Joe Russo are returning to direct the film, while the screenplay comes from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.

The newly released trailer gives fans their first glimpse at the massive conflict coming to the MCU. The film brings together several different groups of heroes, including the Avengers, Wakandans, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, as they face one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains yet, Doctor Doom.

One of the biggest surprises surrounding the project is Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU. However, he is not coming back as Tony Stark’s Iron Man. Instead, Downey is playing Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, a powerful villain who will challenge heroes from multiple universes.

According to Marvel’s announcements, the road to Avengers: Doomsday has changed significantly since the movie was first revealed. The project was originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with Kang the Conqueror expected to be the main villain. However, Marvel later moved away from that storyline after Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, was removed from the franchise following his legal issues.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ New Countdown Clock Just Made The Wait Feel Painfully Real

In 2024, Marvel confirmed major changes to the film, including the return of the Russo brothers, Stephen McFeely joining the writing team, Robert Downey Jr. being cast as Doctor Doom, and the new title Avengers: Doomsday. These changes transformed the movie into a major multiverse event that could connect different corners of Marvel’s history.

The film will also bring back characters from previous Marvel projects, including actors from the original X-Men movies from 20th Century Fox. By using the idea of different universes coming together, Marvel is creating a crossover that combines heroes from multiple franchises for one enormous battle.

The story takes place after the events of Thunderbolts*, with heroes from different realities joining forces against Doctor Doom. The Avengers, Wakandans, and New Avengers from Earth-616 will unite with the Fantastic Four from another universe and the original X-Men from a separate reality.

Filming for Avengers: Doomsday took place in 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, along with additional location shoots in England and Bahrain. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, as part of Marvel’s Phase Six lineup. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently planned for release on December 17, 2027.
