The last time fans saw Steve Rogers, he had returned the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines and decided to stay in the 1940s, marrying Peggy Carter.

He lived a full life there and eventually passed his shield to Sam Wilson, leaving behind his role as Captain America. Since then, the character hasn’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that might change with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Both Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are confirmed to appear in the film. Atwell’s role as Peggy Carter has been confirmed, while Evans’ role remains unclear.

Evans has the option to return as multiple characters, including the original Captain America, a variant, or even the Human Torch. However, new set photos from Avengers: Doomsday suggest that Evans may be reprising his role as the original Captain America.

The images show a vintage farmhouse with swings, slides, small bicycles, and an old green car, hinting that Steve and Peggy may have children. A source on set said, “The farmhouse had swings and slides for children,” pointing toward a new chapter in Steve and Peggy’s life.

This has sparked theories that Steve’s life with Peggy may face tragedy. One idea is that his choice to stay in the past created incursions that indirectly led to Doctor Doom’s family being killed. Doom could now be targeting Steve, blaming him for these timeline-altering events and manipulating others to achieve revenge.

From a technical standpoint, this makes sense in the MCU. Prolonged time travel or Multiversal travel can lead to incursions, where entire universes may be destroyed. For comparison, Doctor Strange used dreamwalking in 2018 to track Thanos across the Multiverse.

His actions caused an incursion that destroyed a universe and everyone in it. Strange himself warned, “Look, I’m sorry you couldn’t save your own universe, but maybe, you could help to save mine?”

In another storyline, Strange traveled through the Multiverse to fight alternate versions of himself, which again triggered an incursion. Clea later confronted him, saying, “You caused an incursion and we’re gonna fix it.” Kang the Conqueror also explained the dangers of incursions during the Multiversal War.

He told Janet van Dyne, “I saw their chaos spreading across realities. Universes colliding. Endless incursions.” These examples show how time travel and Multiversal interference can have catastrophic consequences, and you simply cannot find an example of “prolonged” time travel as drastic as Steve Rogers’.

If Avengers: Doomsday follows this pattern, Steve Rogers’ peaceful life with Peggy may not last. His return could come with huge stakes for the Multiverse, and Doctor Doom may play a major role in confronting him.
