‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Gave Fans Their Best Look Yet at Nightcrawler’s Comic-Accurate Costume
Marvel’s marketing machine has been in overdrive lately, dropping trailers, promo art, and now merchandise to keep fans buzzing ahead of December’s massive crossover event. With more than thirty characters spanning multiple eras of the franchise set to appear, every new reveal has become an opportunity to dissect exactly how each hero and villain will look on screen.
Among the returning faces generating the most curiosity has been the Fox-era X-Men, whose live-action costumes were often criticized during their original run for straying far from their comic book roots. As Marvel Studios prepares to reintroduce these characters within its own cinematic universe, fans have been eager to see whether the studio finally gives them the comic-accurate treatment.
New merchandise tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has now given fans their fullest look yet at Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, revealing a costume that leans heavily into the character’s classic comic book design. The look preserves Nightcrawler’s signature blue skin, yellow eyes, tail, and pointed ears, while introducing a more comic-faithful wardrobe than anything seen in his previous cinematic appearances.
This latest reveal follows a similar unveiling at D23 Expo, where a physical display first gave fans an up-close look at both Nightcrawler’s costume and swords alongside Mystique’s outfit. That exhibit marked the character’s first real showcase after being notably absent from the film’s marketing materials up to that point, despite Marvel confirming Cumming’s casting back in March.
Nightcrawler’s redesigned outfit includes twin cutlasses, a long coat featuring the iconic X logo, a waistcoat, and pinstriped trousers, giving the character a more tactical, weapon-ready presence compared to his earlier film appearances. That addition of bladed weapons hints at a more physically active role for the character, a notable departure given his traditionally conflicted relationship with violence in the comics.

Mystique’s design has also received similar comic-accurate treatment, with the character now sporting her classic white regalia and a small tiara, marking a significant shift from her scaled, blue-skinned appearance in the earlier Fox films. Both costumes are part of a larger display highlighting the film’s massive ensemble cast, which spans characters from the MCU, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and the returning Fox-era X-Men.
Other confirmed X-Men returning for the film include Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Channing Tatum as Gambit, each reportedly receiving costume refreshes aimed at bringing their looks closer to their source material. That approach mirrors similar treatment given to characters like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which earned praise for finally delivering a comic-accurate suit after decades of alternate designs.
With Robert Downey Jr. leading the film as Doctor Doom, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious crossover events in the franchise’s history, setting the stage for the follow-up film, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ The film’s marketing has steadily rolled out new looks at its massive cast in the months leading up to its December 18 release, with each reveal generating fresh waves of fan discussion online.
For longtime X-Men fans who spent years watching Fox’s films sidestep comic-accurate designs, this latest wave of costume reveals represents a meaningful shift in how Marvel Studios plans to treat these characters going forward. Whether that faithfulness extends beyond costuming into the characters’ actual roles within the story remains to be seen once the film finally arrives in theaters.
