‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Gave Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom His First Real Lines, and Fans Are Already Shaking
D23 has become the place where Marvel Studios saves its biggest surprises, and this year’s Ultimate Fan Event in Anaheim was no exception. Between panels, costume reveals, and a showroom packed with Multiverse Saga artifacts, one presentation stood above the rest for anyone still catching their breath from the summer’s first look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
The film has been building momentum for months now, ever since four character-focused teasers dropped last December and a proper first trailer finally arrived just a few weeks ago. That earlier footage barely gave audiences more than a glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. in his new role as Victor von Doom, leaving fans hungry for more.
That hunger was finally answered on Friday night, when Marvel Studios debuted a new “Special Look” at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ during Disney’s Entertainment Showcase, putting Downey’s Doctor Doom front and center for the first time. The nearly two-and-a-half-minute clip delivers the character’s first real dialogue, closing on the now-viral line: “Hell answers to me. For I am Doom.”
The footage doesn’t just flex Doom’s menace, it also digs into his tragedy. Narration frames Victor as the smartest man in every room, a figure who “used to be kind” until everything he loved was taken from him, setting up his descent into villainy well ahead of his clashes with Thor, the X-Men, and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards.
Kevin Feige revealed the footage onstage alongside Downey, Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell, who are returning as Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. The pair couldn’t resist teasing their characters’ fate after ‘Avengers: Endgame’ left them dancing off into a happy ending.
Atwell joked that “there’s nothing this crowd loves more than a happy ever after,” while Evans followed with a knowing “we should’ve known better,” as the actors described during the panel. It’s a small but telling hint that Steve and Peggy’s story isn’t as settled as fans hoped.
The surprises didn’t stop there. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds crashed the presentation via video message, jokingly campaigning for Wolverine and Deadpool to be written into the film, though neither actor would confirm anything concrete about their involvement.
Beyond the trailer itself, D23 attendees got a firsthand look at a brand-new Doctor Doom costume on the show floor, a more understated, Latverian-inspired suit distinct from the battle-armor design shown at Comic-Con in July. Fans quickly began speculating that the alternate look could hint at Doom’s dual role in the story, possibly starting out as an ally before ultimately turning against the heroes.
Social media reaction has been fierce, with fans dissecting every frame of Doom’s new suit and picking apart the “Hell answers to me” line for clues about the character’s arc. The costume reveal alone sparked a wave of comparisons to Doom’s classic comic book design, with many calling it the most comic-accurate take on the villain yet.
Marvel also used the moment to push ticket sales into high gear. General admission tickets for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ officially went on sale following the D23 reveal, expanding beyond the exclusive Infinity Vision premium format screenings that saw massive pre-sale numbers back in July.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the filmmakers behind ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together heroes from the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four for what’s being billed as the beginning of the end for the Multiverse Saga. The film features a staggering ensemble that includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Letitia Wright, and dozens more familiar faces from across the franchise.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ set to close out Doom’s saga the following year.
