‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Lands Early as Disney Confirms a New Release Date

Marvel fans usually spend the weeks before a big release counting down the days, so a surprise shortcut is always welcome. With the next Avengers event now just months away, one of its biggest markets has just been handed a head start. Here’s what changed and why it matters for the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ rollout.

The movie has already had a bumpy road to the calendar. Disney delayed ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ from its original May 1, 2026 date to December 18, 2026, and the studio later chose the new schedule to give filmmakers more time. Marvel also reset the story after dropping Jonathan Majors as the saga’s main villain, bringing Robert Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom and the Russo brothers back to direct.

Now, the UK is getting a small but meaningful gift. Disney has officially confirmed that the film’s UK release date is moving up from December 18 to December 16, as first shared by Empire magazine and confirmed by Disney to Digital Spy. That means British audiences will see the film two days before the December 18 release elsewhere.

The early UK date isn’t a shock. According to Empire, both ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ landed in UK cinemas a day or two before their wider international rollouts, and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ hit British screens a couple of days before the US and Canada.

Signs had also been pointing this way for weeks. Back in June, reports said Brazil would premiere the film on December 16, and IMDb’s release information listed Italy and Norway for the same date. Earlier this month, UK chain Cineworld listed December 16 as the film’s standard release, and fans spotted a US advance screening on the same date at a California theater.

Early international openings are common practice for tentpoles. One outlet noted that studios often use them to build global momentum and to limit piracy leaks in certain regions.

The new date also slots neatly into a packed pre-Christmas schedule. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is now getting preview screenings from December 15, so the earlier ‘Doomsday’ arrival gives UK moviegoers a chance to space out two of the season’s biggest films. Empire joked that fans could cram in extra trips to Latveria and Arrakis before the ultimate geeky double bill.

Anticipation is already sky-high. TheWrap reported that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has racked up more than $50 million in presales and is expected to challenge the $360 million domestic opening record set by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and the $1.22 billion global opening record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’. A two-day head start for the UK adds to the sense of an event rollout.

The film’s finish line is tight. Principal photography ran from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, but additional photography continued deep into this summer. Joe Russo said in June that the team expected to keep working until November, and the directors describe the movie as now being in editing and scoring while they “soft prep” for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

That late work has made some fans nervous, particularly with reports that Marvel kept adding cameos. Even so, the confirmed early UK date is a reassuring sign that the release plan is holding together. The cast is enormous, mixing MCU regulars with X-Men film veterans in a story built around colliding universes.

Before the main event, Marvel is warming audiences up with ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, which arrives September 25 with special footage and an extended runtime for IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings. That re-release doubles as a preview of what’s coming in December. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ then follows on December 17, 2027.
