‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Merch Just Broke a 26-Year Rule for Ian McKellen’s Magneto

Marvel’s marketing machine has been in overdrive ahead of one of the most anticipated crossover events in the studio’s history, and every new piece of promotional material seems to unlock another decades-old mystery. Fans have spent months dissecting trailers, toy reveals, and leaked images trying to piece together exactly how the film’s massive ensemble cast will look on screen.

Ian McKellen’s Magneto has been at the center of much of that speculation, given his long and complicated history with the character across multiple film franchises. Now that history has finally caught up with a detail longtime X-Men fans have been waiting decades to see.

New ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ character art surfaced online, showing Ian McKellen’s Magneto with an X-Men belt buckle at his waist, marking the first time the actor’s version of the character has ever worn the team’s symbol, dating all the way back to his debut in the original ‘X-Men’ film in 2000. The reveal caps a turn of events 26 years in the making, finally giving McKellen’s Magneto the kind of comic-accurate detail fans have wanted since Fox’s earliest X-Men movies.

The newly surfaced art places the film’s heroes inside individual display panels, with Magneto’s section revealing his full costume: his classic helmet, a red tunic, and a fur-trimmed cape draped over his shoulders. The design pulls directly from the comics, where Erik Lehnsherr’s red and purple color scheme has defined the character for decades, a stark departure from the darker, more muted costumes McKellen wore throughout his previous X-Men appearances.

That costume detail lines up directly with a wave of ‘Doomsday’ merchandise revealed around San Diego Comic-Con, where Hot Toys, Hasbro, and Iron Studios all unveiled Magneto collectibles bearing the same X-logo buckle, confirming the design comes straight from the film itself rather than existing as a one-off promotional choice. Hot Toys’ deluxe figure of the character features a tailored long-sleeved tunic, matching pants, tall boots, and a belt accented by an X-logo buckle, alongside a dramatic gray cape with burgundy interior lining and a newly developed helmeted head sculpt.

The absence of the X-Men symbol on McKellen’s Magneto has been a quiet but persistent gap throughout his run as the character. Michael Fassbender’s younger version of Magneto briefly wore a comic-accurate suit in ‘X-Men: First Class’, only for later films to abandon that costume choice entirely, meaning McKellen’s iteration of the character had never worn the emblem across any of his appearances in ‘X-Men’, ‘X2: X-Men United’, ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, or ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.

Beyond the costume itself, some of the promotional material hints at what Magneto might actually be doing once the film arrives. The pricier Deluxe Version of the Hot Toys Magneto figure comes packaged with a display base featuring a Sentinel head, hinting at Magneto using his powers against the X-Men’s robotic adversaries at some point during the story.

That detail lines up with exclusive footage shown to San Diego Comic-Con attendees suggesting Doctor Doom may be reprogramming Sentinels to battle the film’s heroes, with the robots reportedly sporting glowing green eyes in that unreleased footage. Given Magneto’s long history of fighting against Sentinel programs throughout X-Men lore, that connection tracks with the character’s established motivations translating into the MCU.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, picking up 14 months after the events of ‘Thunderbolts’.
