‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Outpace ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at the Same Point in Its Rollout

Marvel Studios has spent much of this year trying to convince audiences that superhero fatigue isn’t the death sentence some industry watchers feared, and the early numbers behind ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are giving the studio plenty of ammunition. With months still left before release, the film’s advance ticket sales have already started drawing direct comparisons to one of the year’s biggest box office success stories.

That comparison point is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,‘ which delivered a record-breaking domestic opening and became one of Sony’s biggest hits of the year. Any film measuring up favorably against that kind of benchmark, especially this far ahead of its own release, tends to grab attention across the industry.

According to tracking data from the BoxOfficeTheory forums that quickly spread across Reddit’s r/boxoffice community, ‘Doomsday’s’ presales at 83 days before release have already surpassed the pace ‘Brand New Day’ had reached with just 21 days remaining before its own debut. The same tracking suggests preview grosses could top $60 million, with $70 million considered possible.

That kind of preview total would place ‘Doomsday’ in rare territory, matching the caliber of openings previously reserved for only the biggest blockbusters in recent memory. ‘Brand New Day’ itself earned $72 million from its Wednesday evening and Thursday preview screenings, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ pulled in $60 million from its own Thursday night previews back in 2019.

Disney’s sales strategy for ‘Doomsday’ has been notably front-loaded compared to typical blockbuster campaigns. Tickets first went on sale July 20 alongside the film’s first trailer, initially limited to premium formats, generating $16.5 million in the first 24 hours according to Variety, before expanding to all theaters and showtimes during D23 in August.

That early push has translated into consistently strong tracking updates throughout the summer. After its first two days of wide availability, ‘Doomsday’ was running roughly 65% ahead of the pace ‘Brand New Day’ had set over the same comparable window, according to TheWrap. Presales crossed $35 million by August 19 and had climbed past $55 million by mid-September, with over 70% of those early sales going toward premium format screenings.

For context, ‘Brand New Day’ didn’t cross $40 million in presales until roughly 40 days before its own release, while ‘Doomsday’ passed that same threshold with nearly 100 days still remaining on the clock. That gap in timing makes the comparison especially notable, even accounting for the fact that Disney opened sales considerably earlier than Sony did for its own release.

Tracking firm Global Box Office has projected an opening weekend somewhere between $260 million and $300 million domestically for ‘Doomsday,’ putting it in the same conversation as ‘Endgame’s’ $357.1 million debut and ‘Brand New Day’s’ $360 million opening. Those projections remain estimates rather than confirmed figures, and plenty of factors could still shift the trajectory before December.

Still, the early data suggests genuine audience appetite for the return of the Avengers brand, paired with the novelty of Robert Downey Jr.’s shift from Iron Man to Doctor Doom. Whether that enthusiasm holds steady through the holiday release window remains to be seen, but for now, the numbers are giving Marvel plenty of reason for optimism.
