For decades, fans of the Fox-era X-Men movies have had one wish. They wanted to see the characters in their comic-book costumes, with the bright colors and bold silhouettes that the original films avoided.

Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is finally answering that request, and each new piece of promotional material shows more of it. The latest batch focuses on 3 of the franchise’s most beloved mutants.

New promo art for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ shows Professor X, Magneto and Nightcrawler in life-size cutout-style images. Patrick Stewart’s Xavier sits in his wheelchair wearing a dark blue jacket with an X emblem, while Ian McKellen’s Magneto stands in a deep red suit with a cape and helmet.

The pairing of Stewart and McKellen carries enormous weight. The two actors first played Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr in the early 2000s, and the film marks Magneto’s official MCU debut.

Stewart’s Xavier is a notable return as well. A variant of the character met a vicious end in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ so this version arrives with a different context.

The third teaser leaned into the relationship. It showed Xavier’s wheelchair and a floating chess piece, a callback to the ending of ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ before a shaggy-haired Magneto embraces his old friend. The footage suggests the two have reconciled.

Magneto’s costume is the standout of the new art. In the Fox films, his look was mostly a dark, understated outfit, with the full comic suit appearing only briefly in ‘X-Men: First Class’ on Michael Fassbender.

The new design restores the classic red-and-cape look with a helmet. It is a clear signal that the film is embracing the comics rather than avoiding them.

Xavier’s outfit is a quieter update, but it keeps the X emblem front and center. Together, the two designs set up a visual contrast that fits their opposing philosophies.

Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler may be the biggest surprise. The actor has not played Kurt Wagner since ‘X2’ in 2003, and his White House attack remains one of the most celebrated action sequences in comic book movies.

At the D23 display, a mannequin showed the costume with twin cutlasses, blue skin, yellow eyes, a tail and pointed ears. Merchandise since then has provided a fuller look at a comic-leaning design.

Cumming has previously said he filmed his part in isolation, with lots of green screen and face replacement, and that characters were even given fake names. He has also acknowledged that the X-Men cast is older than most of the ‘Doomsday’ ensemble.

These 3 are part of a much larger group. The returning mutants also include James Marsden’s Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique and Channing Tatum’s Gambit.

The second trailer, revealed at D23, showed an army of Sentinels facing the heroes. Other promo art has put the mutants alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in a single image, with Doctor Doom looming behind them.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has not been confirmed, which has kept speculation alive.

Marsden has said the film places familiar characters in new, comic-accurate suits, and the mutant artwork bears that out. Marvel appears to be treating this as a fresh start for the legacy characters rather than a simple reunion.

That approach also helps the film’s ensemble feel cohesive. The X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four and Wakandans all share a similar comic-book visual language.

Whether the story gives the mutants as much attention as the costumes is the open question. With so many characters in play, screen time will be a challenge.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in US theaters on Dec 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, the villain at the center of the multiverse threat.

A separate ‘X-Men’ reboot with a new cast follows in 2028. That makes this film something of a farewell for several legacy actors.

For now, the new art offers fans a polished look at what they have waited years to see. The details suggest the studio is taking the mutants seriously.
