Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday recently brought a bit of Hollywood magic to South London. Film crews set up at Greenwich’s Naval College this week, and Shortlist spotted the activity. The site was closed to the public from midweek through Sunday, January 11, as crews filmed scenes that looked like they were set in 1940s London.

Period vehicles, including vintage police cars and a red double-decker bus, rolled through the area. Extras dressed in wartime clothing added to the historic feel. Staff on site were tight-lipped about the project, only revealing that it was for a “blockbuster fantasy sequel” from a very well-known franchise. Photographers wearing Avengers: Doomsday jackets suggested that Marvel’s superhero team had made a stop in London for these scenes.

Though the main filming for Avengers: Doomsday wrapped in September 2025, Marvel films often require reshoots and additional photography to fit in last-minute story changes or actor schedules. This recent Greenwich shoot seems to be part of that ongoing production process.

One obvious reason for a wartime London setting could involve Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Chris Evans is returning as the Avenger, and time travel has played a big role in his past appearances.

A visit to Blitz-era London would make sense, especially if he interacts with Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell. Atwell’s character is said to have an important role in this sequel. The first teaser for the film shows Rogers holding a baby, which fans assume belongs to Peggy. Coupled with hints from the post-credits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, some speculate that Doctor Doom may be involved in a plot targeting superhero children.

Greenwich’s Naval College is no stranger to movie magic. It has hosted scenes for Pirates of the Caribbean and Kingsman. Marvel has used it before, including for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: The Dark World digitally destroyed parts of the location.

The college has also doubled as other European locations, like Paris for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. One simple reason for its popularity with productions is space. According to security staff, Central London has similar-looking streets but lacks the room to comfortably fit all the sets, vehicles, and crews needed for a major shoot.

While this doesn’t confirm exactly how the Avengers will time travel in the sequel, it strongly suggests that at least part of Avengers: Doomsday will take place in 1940s London. Fans will have to wait for official details, but the Greenwich footage hints at some exciting period-action sequences in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s exciting to see Marvel experimenting with historic settings. A 1940s London scene adds new depth to the Avengers’ story and connects directly to characters like Captain America and Peggy Carter. What do you think — are you excited to see the MCU in wartime London, or does it feel out of place? Share your thoughts in the comments.
