‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Star Robert Downey Jr. Finally Reveals Whether He Prefers Playing Iron Man or Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. spent over a decade building one of the most beloved character arcs in modern blockbuster history as Tony Stark, a role that helped launch the MCU and gave him a complete, emotionally satisfying send-off in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Given how thoroughly that chapter of his career wrapped up, few expected him to return to the franchise at all, let alone in a role built to stand directly against the heroes he once led.

That return arrived earlier this year when Marvel confirmed Downey would play Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,‘ swapping his iconic red-and-gold armor for the villain’s hooded, mask-covered look. Since then, Downey has spent his press tour reflecting on just how different the experience of playing a villain has felt compared to anchoring the franchise as its central hero.

That reflection reached its most surprising point yet at D23, where Downey Jr. was asked directly to choose between his two Marvel roles. Speaking with Good Morning America in Anaheim, he settled on Doctor Doom, explaining that the experience let him “really observe what I’ve been missing the whole time, just everybody else.” He described the shift as initially disorienting, admitting it was “really weird being the guy” left out while the rest of the cast bonded together as heroes on one side of the camera.

Rather than resenting that isolation, Downey said it gave him a new appreciation for his castmates, specifically pointing to getting closer with Hayley Atwell and deepening his existing history with Chris Evans. He credited Doomsday’s central relationships as genuinely surprising and beautiful, ultimately landing on Doom as his preferred role, at least for now, because of everything that vantage point allowed him to notice about the people around him.

Downey has drawn a clear distinction between his two characters throughout his press appearances this year. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly following Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Downey explained that “Tony had the trauma that turned him into a hero, and Doom’s got the exact opposite.” He described stepping into the villain’s mask as isolating, noting that watching the rest of the cast interact during breaks left him feeling like the outsider of the group.

That sense of separation appears to have been intentional on the production’s part, mirroring the character’s own standing as the film’s central antagonist rather than a member of the ensemble. Chris Evans has also spoken about the strangeness of watching his longtime co-star inhabit that role, recalling moments where the excitement of seeing Downey perform pulled him back into old memories from filming the original ‘Avengers’ before remembering the dynamic between them had fundamentally shifted.

Downey’s comments arrived alongside D23’s debut of previously Comic-Con-exclusive Doomsday footage, giving fans outside San Diego their first look at material that had circulated only through secondhand accounts until now. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, Downey’s willingness to embrace the villain role so openly suggests Marvel is leaning into his transformation as a genuine selling point rather than treating it as a mere gimmick.

Whether Downey ultimately returns to playing a version of Tony Stark again someday remains an open question, but for now, his answer offers a rare glimpse into how differently the two roles have shaped his experience on set.
