‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Steps Up to the Plate: A World Series Reveal Could Finally Show the Rumored Baseball Scene
Marvel has never been shy about picking big stages for its biggest reveals, but this one might be its most unexpected. The world’s most powerful heroes are about to crash into baseball’s biggest showdown. For fans of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,‘ the Fall Classic just became must-see TV.
The film arrives in theaters on December 18, with Anthony and Joe Russo returning to direct and Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom. Marvel has already released four main teaser trailers, a full trailer and a special look, which debuted at D23. Tickets are now on sale for showings starting in December.
Now an MLB host is fanning the flames. Kait Maniscalco, the MLB Network host and creator of ‘Baseball for Baddies,’ teased the upcoming special look by revealing that she was on set when an iconic baseball scene was filmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ She described it as one of the most surreal experiences she has ever had, and fans immediately started connecting the dots.

MLB and Marvel announced the partnership on Thursday via an Instagram post. In the video, baseball stars including Bryce Harper, Jacob Misiorowski, Freddie Freeman, Randy Arozarena and Junior Caminero stand with their backs to the camera on the field when the sky turns green and the Avengers logo appears.
The special look will air during Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, October 23, at 8 p.m. ET on FOX, with the Tampa Bay Rays facing the Milwaukee Brewers. An exact time for the reveal hasn’t been announced, so viewers will need to keep an eye on the broadcast. MLB also said fans should tune in for an exclusive preview, with the film in theaters everywhere December 18.
Marvel hasn’t confirmed what the footage will contain, and speculation suggests it could be an extended scene rather than a conventional trailer. The leading theory points to a baseball sequence featuring Ben Grimm, a.k.a. the Thing, the Human Torch and Steve Rogers. That lines up with what insider Daniel Richtman reported during production, when he said Marvel was filming scenes set during a baseball game on the Fantastic Four’s Earth, along with sequences set in The Void.
Another theory suggests the scene was originally shot as a post-credits stinger for ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ According to that rumor, Reed Richards, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm attend a game on their retro-futuristic Earth, possibly at the same time as Victor von Doom’s unannounced visit to the Baxter Building. None of that is confirmed, so it’s best treated as speculation until the footage airs.

A baseball scene would offer a rare glimpse of the MCU’s heroes outside a battle. The larger story around the film could be considerably darker, since it brings together heroes from three distinct universes on what Marvel describes as a deadly collision course. A quiet ballpark moment would make a striking contrast.
The setting for the reveal is also a big one. Game 1 pits the Rays against the Brewers, and Milwaukee is back in the World Series for the first time since 1982 after sweeping the two-time defending champion Dodgers in the NLCS. Putting a Marvel preview in front of that enormous live audience is a bold marketing move.
The film shares its opening day with ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which sets up a blockbuster showdown at the box office. It also leads into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ which is scheduled for the following December. The cast is stacked, with many returning MCU favorites, X-Men stars like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, and Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby’s Fantastic Four.
Whatever airs on Friday, it’s already succeeded in making baseball fans curious about the Avengers and Marvel fans curious about baseball. Marvel has built its reputation on surprise reveals, and this one is playing out in front of one of the biggest audiences in sports.
What do you think Marvel will reveal in the Avengers: Doomsday World Series special look?
