‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Unveils Haunting New Incursion Art, and It’s the Multiverse Collapse in One Image
Marvel’s marketing for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been a steady drumbeat of posters, trailers and cast reveals. But the newest piece of promotional art is different, because it focuses on the thing that’s supposed to end everything. It’s a look at the incursion at the heart of the film.
The campaign has leaned on star power so far, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom front and center and a huge ensemble of heroes from multiple universes. That makes sense for a film that brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, including returning stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer. The cosmic stakes behind all those faces have mostly been abstract.
The new image changes that. It shows two planets smashing into each other in an explosion of pink and violet energy, with jagged debris scattering across space. Unlike much of the campaign, it features no heroes, no villains and no logos, just the sheer scale of the threat.
That fits the plot. In the MCU, an incursion is the collision of two universes, where the boundary between them erodes and one or both are destroyed. The idea was introduced in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and it has been building toward a crossover event ever since.

Marvel has been showing pieces of this for months. The recent re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as ‘Endgame Encore’ added new scenes, including a post-credits sequence in which the TVA watches the multiverse collapse. In it, Earth-10005, the universe of Fox’s X-Men films, collides with Earth-1127, and by the end thousands of universes are being destroyed.
Earlier promo art teased a three-way incursion, with the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men logos colliding. That image hinted at Earth-616, Earth-828 and Earth-10005 converging. A new international poster also placed two worlds colliding behind a lineup of heroes that includes Gambit, Loki, Captain America, Shuri, Professor X, Cyclops and Mister Fantastic, with a masked Doom looming above them.
Joe Russo has described the multiverse collapse as the most profound thing to have happened in the MCU, and Anthony Russo has called it the unifying principle that combines the X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four universes. Reports suggest Doom will use incursions to reshape the multiverse in his own image, which would set up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
The term comes directly from Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers run, where the storyline leading into the 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ event introduced the idea. In those comics, once an incursion begins, two universes have mere hours to choose between colliding and dying together or destroying one world to save the other. That’s a brutal choice, and it’s likely to drive the film’s drama.
Marvel Comics is also leaning into the moment. A new series of five Incursions one-shots begins in November, starting with ‘X-Men: Incursions’ #1, and revisits untold battles from the multiverse’s final days. It’s a clear sign that the publisher sees this as a big cultural moment.

The buzz around the film is already enormous. The July trailer became the second-biggest movie trailer launch on record and Disney’s most-viewed trailer to date. Domestic pre-sales have reportedly passed $50 million, with more than 70% of tickets going to premium Infinity Vision screens.
The film also arrives on the heels of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which set a new Marvel opening-weekend record of $360 million worldwide. That raises expectations further, especially since ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18 against ‘Dune: Part Three’. Its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
The new art doesn’t reveal any plot specifics, but it sets the tone. It shows what’s actually at stake when heroes from three universes finally collide with a villain who’s always three moves ahead.
