‘Avengers: Endgame’ Crosses $2.8 Billion, Closing in on Box Office’s Biggest Prize
Nostalgia can only carry a re-release so far at the box office, but Marvel Studios has proven with ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ that a well-timed encore can still move the needle in a major way. The 2019 blockbuster’s return to theaters wasn’t just about giving longtime fans another chance to relive the Infinity Saga’s finale.
It was also designed with a very specific mission in mind: closing the gap on one of cinema’s most stubborn records. For years, ‘Endgame’ has sat just behind James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ on the all-time global box office chart, a gap that once seemed nearly impossible to close without a fresh theatrical push.
That push has now officially begun paying off. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has crossed $2.8 billion at the global box office following the debut of its ‘Endgame Encore’ re-release, putting the film roughly $120 million away from overtaking ‘Avatar’s’ $2.92 billion worldwide total.
The milestone came after the Encore re-release added roughly $10 million worldwide on its opening day, according to figures shared by tracking service Global Box Office. That single-day haul was enough to push ‘Endgame’ past the $2.8 billion threshold for the first time.
Unlike a typical reissue, ‘Endgame Encore’ isn’t simply a straight replay of the 2019 original. Marvel added roughly four minutes of new footage designed to bridge the film directly into ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ including new material involving Loki, Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, Bruce Banner and Doctor Doom, along with additional scenes tied to the multiverse.
Every Encore screening also comes with an exclusive preview of ‘Doomsday,’ which arrives in theaters on December 18. That built-in incentive appears to be working, with the re-release pulling in $3.8 million from Thursday preview screenings alone, according to The Hollywood Reporter, ahead of a projected $25 million domestic weekend and another $25 million to $30 million internationally.
Even with that strong start, box office analysts caution that closing the remaining $120 million gap won’t happen overnight. ‘Endgame’ will need consistent, strong holds across multiple weekends to fully erase the deficit and reclaim the all-time crown, rather than relying on one big opening frame alone.
This isn’t the first time these two films have traded places atop the all-time chart. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ first surpassed ‘Avatar’ in 2019, only for Cameron’s film to reclaim the record in 2021 after a rerelease in China pushed its total past $2.8 billion.
History suggests ‘Avatar’ won’t simply cede ground without a fight. The film’s 2022 theatrical rerelease alone brought in $30 million worldwide, enough to top the global box office that particular weekend, a reminder that Cameron’s film has consistently found ways to add to its total whenever it returns to theaters.

Still, with ‘Doomsday’ hype building and Marvel clearly intent on using ‘Endgame Encore’ as a launching pad, the pressure is squarely on ‘Avatar’ to respond. Whether ‘Endgame’ can finally close the gap for good remains one of the more compelling subplots of this fall’s box office season.
