Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Just Took Indonesia’s Biggest-Movie Crown Back From a Local Comedy Hit

Few box office rivalries this year have been as charming as the one between Marvel’s biggest team-up and a homegrown comedy about four detectives in a nursing home. The arrival of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore‘ in Indonesia has pulled that friendly contest back into the spotlight. It also did so with a head start on the rest of the world.

Indonesian cinemas began screening the re-release on September 23, two days before its September 25 debut in the United States. It opened across Cinema XXI, CGV, Cinepolis and FLIX, in formats ranging from 2D to IMAX, ScreenX and 4DX, with ticket prices between Rp50,000 and Rp150,000.

This is not a straight rerun of the 2019 film. The Encore cut runs 185 minutes, roughly four minutes longer than the original, and adds a special opening and extra footage that links the story to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings also offer an additional sneak peek at the upcoming sequel.

So how did the opening day go? Data platform Cinepoint reported that ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ pulled in 131,692 admissions across 2,108 showtimes on its first day, and the app declared that the Avengers had assembled once again.

The figure matters because of what happened earlier this year. ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’ surpassed ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as the most-watched film ever screened in Indonesian cinemas, reaching 10,980,141 tickets by mid-March. It finished its run with 11,000,866 admissions, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ stood at 10,976,338 from its original release.

Add the Encore opening day to that original tally and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ climbs to roughly 11.1 million admissions. That puts it back ahead of the comedy, and the figure spread quickly on Reddit’s r/boxoffice community, where users noted the re-release had returned the overall admissions record to Marvel after only a few months in second place.

It is worth keeping the debut in perspective. It is not an all-time opening-day record in Indonesia, since that still belongs to ‘Dilan 1991’ with around 800,255 viewers in 2019, while ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’ opened with 272,846 admissions from 3,722 screens.

The film that briefly wore the crown has its own story. ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’ was written and directed by Muhadkly Acho, produced by Imajinari, and premiered on November 27, 2025 as a standalone sequel to ‘Agak Laen’. It stars podcast hosts Bene Dion, Oki Rengga, Boris Bokir and Indra Jegel as police officers who go undercover in a nursing home to solve a murder.

For local cinema, the earlier upset carried real weight. The Jakarta Post said the comedy’s success showed that Indonesian films can draw enormous audiences in theaters once dominated by Hollywood blockbusters. Seeing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ reclaim the top spot only adds a fresh chapter to that rivalry.

The Indonesian tally is still growing. How far ‘Endgame Encore’ stretches its lead over the comedy will depend on how long local cinemas keep it on their screens.

Globally, the re-release has plenty to chase. Variety’s tracking projected a domestic opening weekend of $25 million to $28 million. ‘Endgame’ sits at $2.799 billion worldwide, leaving a gap of $124 million to ‘Avatar’. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18.
