‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is Heading Back to Theaters, and Early Numbers Are Raising Questions

Marvel Studios has never been shy about using nostalgia as a marketing tool, and its latest move leans directly into that strategy ahead of one of the biggest crossover events in the franchise’s history. ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ is returning to theaters on September 25 as ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore,’ giving audiences a chance to revisit the 2019 blockbuster on the big screen just months before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives on December 18.

The re-release is built around premium formats, with IMAX and a newly introduced certification called Infinity Vision leading the charge for Premium Large Format theaters promising bigger screens, brighter images, and stronger sound. Audiences catching the film in either of those formats will also get an extended first look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ giving Marvel a built-in incentive for fans to seek out the highest-end screenings rather than a standard matinee showing.

That promotional strategy appears to be generating real, if somewhat mixed, momentum at the box office so far. North American pre-sales for the re-release have already topped $10 million, according to numbers shared by account Itsjat32, putting the film on pace for what industry tracking suggests could be a $40 million to $50 million opening weekend.

Those projections would be a genuinely strong result for a catalog re-release, tracking closer to what analysts typically expect from a mid-tier studio tentpole than a standard theatrical rerun of an older film. Box office watchers have noted that the pre-sales velocity spiked immediately following the official announcement, suggesting the surge is being driven largely by dedicated fan communities eager to see the film on a big screen again rather than casual moviegoers stumbling into a rerelease.

Still, the same account tracking the numbers flagged a real concern buried inside the strong headline figures, noting that momentum has reportedly stalled somewhat over the past week or so. That plateau matters because analysts have set a rough benchmark of needing to clear a $25 million opening to be considered a clean success, and the current pacing, while healthy, will need another push to comfortably clear that mark with room to spare.

Exhibitors, for their part, appear to be betting on demand holding up. Major chains including AMC and Regal have reportedly opened additional auditoriums to handle interest, with showtimes in several major markets approaching capacity and some locations adding late-night screenings to absorb overflow crowds.

Beyond the box office implications, the rerelease also functions as a broader industry test case for what executives have described as eventized catalog programming, essentially treating a beloved older title as a limited theatrical event rather than a simple archival screening. If ‘Endgame: Encore’ performs well, it could offer a template other studios look to replicate with their own established franchises in the post-pandemic theatrical landscape, where getting audiences back into theaters for anything short of a brand new release has remained a persistent challenge.

For now, all eyes are on whether the current pre-sales momentum can pick back up before the film actually opens, since the gap between a modest catalog success and a genuine tentpole level result appears to hinge on exactly the kind of late surge studios hope for heading into a big weekend. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ looming just months away, Marvel clearly has plenty riding on ‘Endgame’ proving it can still pack theaters more than seven years after its original release.
