Marvel fans have had plenty to look forward to this year, but nothing quite scratches that nostalgic itch like the promise of watching Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assemble on the big screen one more time. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ looming on the horizon, Disney has been steadily building anticipation with a series of theatrical events designed to bridge the gap between the Infinity Saga and whatever comes next.

That bridge is officially taking shape. ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ now rebranded for its theatrical return as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ is heading back to cinemas worldwide on September 25, giving audiences a chance to relive the franchise’s most emotional chapter before ‘Doomsday’ arrives in December.

Presale tickets for the rerelease officially go on sale this coming Monday, with select IMAX showtimes available in select cities alongside other premium large-format screenings in select theaters. The rollout gives fans an early opportunity to lock in seats for one of the year’s most anticipated theatrical events well ahead of its actual release date.

The rerelease isn’t simply a straight replay of the 2019 cut that redefined superhero cinema. According to Marvel, the presentation includes a custom introduction, additional new footage tied directly into the ‘Doomsday’ storyline, and a special end tag exclusive to Infinity Vision and IMAX screenings.

Director Joe Russo, who helmed the original film alongside his brother Anthony, explained the thinking behind the timing of the rerelease during Disney’s announcement at CineEurope. “It’s critically important to rerelease the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame,” Russo said during the CineEurope presentation, framing the new footage as a way to connect the two films.

He went on to describe the rerelease as an opportunity to create a bridge from ‘Endgame’ to ‘Doomsday’ in a distinctive way, adding that the original film’s massive success made a theatrical return especially fitting. That framing lines up with how the Russos have positioned ‘Doomsday’ as a direct continuation of the emotional stakes ‘Endgame’ first established back in 2019.

The rerelease also gives Disney a chance to debut Infinity Vision, its new premium large-format certification program built specifically for this stretch of Marvel releases. The system is designed to help audiences identify the best available screens in their area, whether that’s IMAX, 4DX, Dolby or another certified large-format option, and both ‘Endgame Encore’ and ‘Doomsday’ will use the designation.

There’s also a compelling box office angle driving interest in the rerelease. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ originally grossed more than 2.7 billion dollars worldwide, sitting just behind the original ‘Avatar’ as one of the highest-grossing films ever made.

If the rerelease manages to add enough additional box office revenue, it could theoretically push the film’s lifetime total past the symbolic 3 billion dollar mark, a feat no movie has ever achieved. That possibility alone has been enough to generate buzz among box office trackers and diehard fans eager to see the franchise hit a milestone no other film has reached.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ arrives roughly twelve weeks ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which is set to premiere on December 18 and reunite much of the franchise’s ensemble cast, including the returning Robert Downey Jr., this time stepping into the role of Doctor Doom rather than Iron Man. For fans who’ve been waiting years for another full-scale Avengers team-up, the return of ‘Endgame’ to theaters offers a fitting way to reset the emotional stage before the next chapter begins.

With presale tickets launching imminently and IMAX showtimes expected to move quickly in major markets, fans eager to relive Marvel’s biggest team-up may want to act fast.
