“Well, not to get too deep, but it was probably that I didn’t want to go out with guys and so I was finding a way to avoid it,” she shared. “I never knew how to flirt, I didn’t get it. I was always friends with guys and would set them up with other friends. In a way it was, like, ‘Great, because I’m not interested.’”

Gunning also spoke about how her confidence affected her dating life. She said that her feelings about her body may have added to her hesitation.

“It might be connected to size, maybe because I was bigger,” she said. “It’s hard to word this because I don’t want it to seem like I’m saying it in a negative way, because it definitely isn’t. I didn’t feel like an alien in a negative way, but it was, like, an otherness.”

While her personal life has been quiet, her acting career continues to grow. She is set to take on the role of Cass Elliot in an upcoming biopic. She will also appear in a new adaptation of The Magic Faraway Tree, along with several well-known actors, and has another project titled Sunny Dancer in development.

Gunning’s story shows that success does not always follow the same path in every part of life. She has built a strong career while still figuring out her personal journey.
