Marvel Studios has stayed almost entirely silent on its long-awaited X-Men reboot, and that silence has created a vacuum insiders and scoopers have been racing to fill for months. With San Diego Comic Con just days away, the pace of casting rumors has picked up considerably, as fans brace for the possibility that Marvel could finally confirm some of its mutant lineup during the studio’s Hall H presentation.

The role generating the most conflicting reports right now belongs to Rogue, the power-absorbing Southern belle who has long been one of the X-Men’s most recognizable members. Names like Odessa A’zion, Sophie Thatcher, Margaret Qualley, Hunter Schafer, and Inde Navarrette have all cycled through the rumor mill at various points, with different insiders pushing different frontrunners seemingly every week.

The latest name to enter that crowded field is Cailee Spaeny. According to insider Beyondreporter1, Spaeny is allegedly in negotiations to play Rogue, a claim that arrived just as another scooper separately named her Marvel Studios’ and director Jake Schreier’s actual top choice for the role. Spaeny has built serious momentum in recent years through acclaimed performances in ‘Priscilla’, ‘Civil War’, and ‘Alien: Romulus’, making her the kind of rising star Marvel has increasingly leaned toward for these reboot-era castings.

Fan reaction to the rumor has been notably mixed. Rather than uniform excitement, plenty of fans have expressed hope that Spaeny is actually being eyed for a different mutant altogether, with Kitty Pryde frequently mentioned as a role some feel would suit her better given the character’s traditionally younger, kid sister dynamic within the team.

Spaeny’s name joins an already crowded and contradictory casting picture across the rest of the reboot’s core roster. Adam Driver has been linked to both Magneto and Mister Sinister depending on which report you believe, while Bill Skarsgård and Cooper Hoffman have separately been floated for Professor X and Cyclops. Margot Robbie and Hunter Schafer have both been connected to Mystique, and Storm has become its own crowded lane, with Cynthia Erivo, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Jodie Turner-Smith all surfacing as possibilities.

None of these reports have been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and the sheer volume of conflicting names attached to single roles like Rogue and Storm underscores just how speculative this entire casting cycle remains. Even scoopers covering the story regularly caution that studios test many candidates before locking in a final choice, meaning today’s frontrunner can easily become next week’s footnote.

Would Cailee Spaeny be a good choice to play Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot?

There is a broader structural reason all of this speculation is intensifying right now. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arriving in theaters soon and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ looming afterward, Marvel is widely expected to use its Hall H presentation to finally lay out its plans for folding the X-Men into the same cinematic universe as the Avengers, a soft reboot years in the making.

Until Marvel actually steps up to a podium and confirms names, every report, including this latest one tying Spaeny to Rogue, should be treated as speculation rather than fact.
