Ben Affleck once admitted that one movie from his career is a source of lasting regret: 2003’s Daredevil.

Speaking to Business Insider, Affleck said, “The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil. It just kills me. I love that story and that character, and the fact that it got f***** up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that’s part of the motivation to do Batman.”

Affleck’s disappointment with Daredevil stems from how the movie turned out, despite his love for the character and story.

He later took on the role of Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, partly motivated by a desire to do justice to a superhero role. “That’s the movie I want to do,” he said, “I want to be a part of that. Part of it was I wanted for once to get one of these movies and do it right – to do a good version. I hate Daredevil so much. It frustrated me.”

Despite his feelings about the 2003 film, Affleck praised the Netflix series Daredevil starring Charlie Cox. “The Netflix show does really cool stuff. I feel like that was there for us to do with that character, and we never kind of got it right. I wanted to do one of those movies and sort of get it right,” he said.

The original Daredevil film, directed by Mark Steven Johnson, starred Affleck as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who fights crime at night as the masked vigilante Daredevil. Jennifer Garner, Michael Clarke Duncan, Colin Farrell, and Joe Pantoliano also appeared in supporting roles.

Released on February 14, 2003, the film had a production budget of $78 million and went on to earn $179.2 million worldwide. It received mixed reviews, though an R-rated director’s cut released in 2004 was received more positively. The movie also led to the spin-off Elektra in 2005, which was not successful.

Critics had mixed opinions on the original Daredevil. Roger Ebert called it “good” and praised the actors, while others felt it lacked a strong narrative arc. Some reviews noted strong moments and character work but criticized the film’s execution. Overall, the movie became a box office success but did not meet the expectations for many fans and critics.
