Ben Affleck’s Teen Turned His Dating History Into a Punchline, and He Couldn’t Help Being Proud

Every parent eventually discovers that their kids are their toughest critics. For a celebrity dad whose love life has been tabloid material for decades, that reckoning comes with a bigger audience. Late-night couches are where stars tend to turn those moments into stories.

Ben Affleck was in that spot this week, sitting down with Jimmy Kimmel to promote his new film. The actor and filmmaker is heading into a busy stretch, with ‘Animals’ set to reach Netflix and select theaters on October 9. It is a crime thriller that he directs and stars in.

While the conversation covered plenty of ground, the story that took off online was a family one. On the September 24 episode of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, Affleck revealed that his kids’ reaction to his relationship advice has been brutal, and that one of his teenagers roasted his dating history in front of the whole table. The clip spread quickly, and coverage even reached Croatia’s Index Magazin.

Affleck explained that dinner conversations at home often turn to friends, drama and relationships. Figuring he had some lived experience worth sharing, he decided to weigh in on one particular situation. His 17-year-old responded by asking whether he considered himself an expert on relationships.

The studio audience burst out laughing, and so did Affleck. He shares three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14. Coverage has been mixed on which of his children delivered the line, so it’s safest to say it came from one of his teens.

The dinner-table joke was not the only sign of a shift in the family dynamic. Affleck said he always assumed he would be the cool dad, and that it’s now clear he is not. He explained that it’s no longer just one teenager rolling their eyes, since he now catches his kids exchanging looks whenever he launches into a lecture.

He described the realization as seeing himself as a caricature in the story. It is a candid admission from a father who admits the tables have turned as his kids near adulthood. The humor, though, clearly lands well with him.

There was a second moment. Affleck said he was browsing a bookstore with the same child when they spotted a book by a French author titled ‘I’m Sorry for Everything’. His kid immediately joked, deadpan, that it must be his autobiography.

Instead of being offended, he said he was proud of the line. He described his child as someone who skirts the line, and said he liked the joke. Outlets from Complex to Just Jared highlighted that reaction as the most endearing part of the story.

The jokes land because the history is well known. Affleck married Garner in 2005, and their divorce was finalized in 2018. He later married Jennifer Lopez in July 2022, after the two had been engaged in the early 2000s, and Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024.

It’s a backstory that has kept him in the headlines for years, which makes the teen’s quip both sharp and relatable. The audience clearly understood the reference. It also shows how much kids can absorb from a public family history, and how they turn it into humor.

The interview also touched on his new movie. In ‘Animals’, he plays Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose life spirals after his son is kidnapped, with Kerry Washington playing his estranged wife. The cast also includes Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Steven Yeun.

Affleck shared that the lead roles were originally written for Matt Damon and Garner. He also said Garner passed when he offered her the role of his love interest, and he praised her as a close friend. On top of that, he discussed winning $1,000,000 for charity on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’.

Part of the appeal is how ordinary it feels. Almost anyone who has tried to give advice to a teenager knows the look he described, and few can claim a better comeback than a well-timed bookstore joke. It is also a reminder that even a two-time Oscar winner is not immune to family teasing.

This is not the first time his kids have been a source of material for Kimmel. While promoting ‘The Accountant 2’ last year, Affleck said his kids roasted him after watching ‘Armageddon’. If the pattern holds, his next appearance will likely include another story about his teenagers.
