Ben McKenzie Is Reuniting With Real-Life Wife Morena Baccarin On Screen for ‘Sheriff Country’ Season 2
CBS’s ‘Fire Country’ universe has quietly become one of network television’s most reliable franchises, spinning off character-driven dramas that lean just as much on real emotional stakes as on procedural action. ‘Sheriff Country,‘ the spinoff centered on Morena Baccarin’s steady, protective Sheriff Mickey Fox, has carved out its own devoted following since debuting within that world.
That momentum only grew after the show’s Season 1 finale left fans with a genuinely shocking twist involving Mickey’s family, setting the stage for a Season 2 that showrunner Matt Lopez has been teasing for months. Along the way, Lopez hinted at a possible casting move that felt almost too good to be scripted.
Now that tease has become reality. Ben McKenzie is officially joining ‘Sheriff Country’ for its Season 2 premiere, marking the first time he and his real-life wife, series star Morena Baccarin, will share the screen together on the CBS drama.
McKenzie will guest star as Sheriff Wade, a neighboring lawman called in to assist Baccarin’s Sheriff Mickey Fox during the premiere episode, titled ‘Cyclone.’ According to the official logline, Wade arrives to help Mickey navigate both a dangerous new threat to the town of Edgewater and a shocking family revelation, though CBS has teased that the visiting sheriff comes with a few secrets of his own.
The casting carries an extra layer of meaning given McKenzie and Baccarin’s history together. The two first met while co-starring on ‘Gotham,’ where McKenzie played Detective James Gordon and Baccarin portrayed Dr. Leslie Thompkins, with their characters eventually marrying on-screen during the series finale. That on-set connection carried over into real life, with the pair marrying off-screen as well.
This isn’t the first hint that McKenzie might join the show, either. Back in May, Lopez revealed he’d recently had lunch with McKenzie and was already thinking about carving out a role for him, though he cautioned at the time that budget could be a factor in whether it actually happened.
Baccarin shared a first look at the reunion on social media, giving fans an early glimpse of Mickey and Wade sharing the screen, along with a behind-the-scenes video of herself and McKenzie together on set. The moment adds a genuinely personal touch to a franchise already built around themes of family and small-town loyalty.
Season 2 has plenty riding on it beyond the McKenzie cameo. The new season picks up the fallout from the finale’s biggest twist, in which Mickey discovered that Eva, the DEA’s deputy director, is actually her mother, a woman she’d believed dead her entire life. That revelation reshapes Mickey’s relationships with both her estranged father, Wes, and her own sense of identity heading into the new season.
‘Sheriff Country’ Season 2 also promises expanded roles for existing cast members Skye and Hank, giving the ensemble more room to breathe alongside the new guest arc. Between the family drama, the criminal threat teased in the premiere, and now McKenzie’s arrival, the season looks poised to raise the stakes considerably from where Season 1 left off.
‘Sheriff Country’ Season 2 premieres Friday, October 9, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS, with episodes also streaming on Paramount+.
