Big Move for DCU’s ‘Booster Gold’ Series as New Writer Steps In
The Booster Gold series is back on track at HBO Max, and it’s got a new creative lead. David Jenkins, best known for creating the comedy Our Flag Means Death, has been brought in to write the pilot. If the show goes to series, Jenkins is also expected to take over as showrunner.
This news comes at a busy time for Warner Bros. Discovery, especially after The Penguin scored 24 Emmy nominations. That kind of success could give Booster Gold a boost as one of the next big DC TV projects.
Booster Gold is based on the DC Comics character created by Dan Jurgens. The main character, Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, is from Gotham City and was once a college football star. He got kicked out of school for gambling, but later used future tech to become a superhero.
He’s known for chasing fame and fortune and not always being the most serious guy. In the comics, Ronald Reagan even gave him the nickname “Booster Gold” after Booster saved him.
James Gunn and Peter Safran, who lead DC Studios, first announced the project more than two years ago as part of their new DC Universe plans. Back then, they described Booster as someone who “uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in the present day.”
Things have moved slowly since then. Recently, it came out that the project had lost its first showrunner. Gunn and Safran also shut down rumors that Kumail Nanjiani had been cast as Booster. So far, no actor has been confirmed for the role.
Bringing in Jenkins could turn things around. He already has a strong connection with HBO from his work on Our Flag Means Death, which starred Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby.
That show ended after two seasons in January 2024 and wasn’t picked up elsewhere. After the cancellation, Jenkins said it “came to a premature end,” but also called HBO and its execs “incredible champions of this show.”
Besides Our Flag Means Death, Jenkins also created People of Earth, a sci-fi comedy that aired on TBS.
This new update arrives just in time for San Diego Comic-Con, where DC shows are expected to get a lot of attention. With The Penguin doing so well and Jenkins now involved, Booster Gold might finally be getting the push it needs to become reality.
The news was first reported by Deadline.
